This crap seems to be happening almost on a weekly basis lately.

Those buggers don't shy away from paddle boards, kayaks, or kiters.

MAUIWatch
SHARKWatch Update: MAUIWatch's Malika Dudley spoke with the woman who had a shark encounter yesterday fronting the Mana Kai Resort. No stranger to ocean activities, she's paddled the Molokai channel, done competitions in Tahiti, dives and has been around other types of sharks before. She describes the shark she encountered as "aggressive" and a "beast" - the water was crystal clear that morning, lots of people enjoying the ocean. She said it came so quick, she saw it out of the corner of her eye. It rammed her board and she fell in the water. She thought "This is it. I'm going to die today." The shark then bit her board and started swimming toward her friend. Her friend screamed "The shark is over here, get on your board!" She got back on her board, yelled at her friend to get on her knees and started praying out loud, that's when the shark (which she describes as being bigger than her board, with distinguishable stripes) came back to ram her board again. She said she was in a state of shock. That's when two ladies, responding to their cries for help, paddled out toward them and, in her words, "they were big together" while paddling back to shore. She says the shark followed them all the way in. "I know I'll be back in the water, I just don't know when that is going to be. I feel sick to my stomach. My girlfriend saved my life and those two ladies are my heroes."

Background info:
The shark encounter occurred yesterday afternoon (2/9/14) a little after 1pm. DLNR closed the beaches from Ulua to Charley Young for 2 hours while Ocean Safety patrolled the area. The beaches were reopened a little after 3pm.

Studies been done, theories tossed around , and I agree fully:
All the overfishing in the ocean, way out where sharks usually feed, depleted their food source. Therefore they come closer to shore to find food.
Makes sense to me. I say, quit eating sushi, especially all those hipsters, ban tuna for just a year world wide, and I bet the sharks go back to their natural behavior.
All day everyday the spear fisherman go out at same local beach. EVERYDAY! Nothing is alive out there anymore. They come back with baby fish, baby octopus, kill eals and throw them away... It's stupid.
Overfishing, shark finning (which is just totally insane, fk you asswipes...crap, can't say what I want, or I'll be labeled as a racist ).. one little pacific nation is 80% responsible for all the seafood crimes, or what ever you want to call it. They kill everything that is in the ocean and call it research.

(Let's not get all the other Fk countries who kill elephants etc for medicinal purposes involved in this conversation. )

So, don't be surprised if a shark is fkn hungry.
sucks to get bitten, but...karma I guess. (for human race)
I don't want to get bit or killed by a shark, but I rather do, not by a fkn drunk driver, idiot with a gun or a comet.

Anyone that suggest we kill sharks because they are afraid should gtfo of the ocean. That playground really just isn't for you. May I suggest a lake or perhaps land kiting.

I don't think anyone really knows yet why the number of shark attacks has increased. The Maui study results in a few years should help.

It seems like many are pointing to increase populations of whales, during migration, and turtles as the cause.

One estimate is that we are already killing 100 million sharks a year, 11,000 an hour, and this estimate may be low due to unreported killings. Killing them doesn't seem to work.

Some prevention measures include electric current devices but there is debate about their effectiveness. Certain shapes (seals/surfboards), colors, and odors (smell of dead sharks), have been researched also.

And the probabilities seem to be with us that it is very unlikely we will be attacked - seems funny we would worry about sharks when there are far greater risks in our sport.

Sharks are awesome! Plenty here in south Florida. Swim, dive, kite and spearfish with big tigers, bulls, hammers and more. Friends got video while diving of a Great White only a couple miles off shore. Never a problem unless spearfishing but that comes with the sport. There are many videos on YouTube of spear fisherman getting bumped or bothered by Tigers. Most here look forward to seeing sharks.

Why are (if they are) the Tigers in Hawaii more aggressive? Not sure they are.

I completely agree. It is ridiculous when people go into nature and complain when nature shows up.
