Where to travel in March?

Postby Rybuffett » Thu Feb 20, 2014 1:51 am

I have off the 2nd week of March and want to take a kite trip, looking for recommendations!

The friend I'm traveling with is new to kiting, but a good surfer, so we need some place he can take lessons. I've been kiting for 8 yrs and want somewhere fun, which could be anything from waves to flar water. We're coming from Cali and don't want to waste too much time traveling, but we're willing to go to the Caribbean or Hawaii. Prefer warm water places, with the possibility of surf in the mornings.

Thanks!

I suggest Barbados as a good combo for surf/kitesurf. On the inside is fine for beginners although kites can get destroyed by the shore break if not careful (I've seen it happen a couple times).

South Padre Island is better for beginner kiters on the bay side (waist deep flat water for miles). The gulf side has surf but it would be considered a bit small + mushy + small period for an expert surfer. It is super fun for kitesurf + wave downwinders.

I've never been to Maui in spring - I know fall is perfect for wind + waves so maybe spring too.

First choice SPI (make sure it's not college spring break)

Second choice St Lucia (north or south end) both have bays for beginners to wash up in.

Not much in the way of surf, but if you want a fantastic place for your friend to learn Provodenciales is great. The bay at Long Bay Beach is clean, warm, shallow, and massive. For lessons there I'd recommend checking out Kite Provo. http://kiteprovo.com/

Thanks! I'll run the suggestions by my friend and then seek some recommended kite schools and things to do.

Also, what about Cabarete this time of year?

I think we're leaning towards Turks and Caicos, any recommendations?

SPI will be good in March. Surf in the morning and Kite in the afternoon. There are 2 main schools down there. ProKite and SPI Kite they both do boat assist on flat shallow water.

Really depends on budget in T&C, there is everything from basic accommodations to full out opulence. This short in notice the pickings might be getting slim, but maybe try contacting KiteProvo to see if an of their partnered accommodations are available.

These sites were helpful for me in finding a place there as well:
http://www.homeaway.com/search/keywords ... %26+Caicos
http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/ca ... idenciales

Depending on where you stay, you will most likely need to rent a car as well.

Good luck!

I am a big Turks and caicos fan...lots to do there in addition to kiting. Good diving and snorkeling. I have done four trips in the last few years and second what jsquid says - its not cheap, definitely use vrbo, and rent a car, if you taxi to long bay or turtle tail you'll spend as much as a car rental for the day. (I always rent from Grace Bay car rentals, less expensive and owned by a Canadian) If you go, bring a bigger kite, we had a 14 last year that kept us out when others sat on the beach with smaller kites. That being said, I have been lit on a 9, so you need a good range. Luckily I usually travel with a couple guys so we have a good supply of kites.Come back here and lets us know how it went.
