How do they hold up on heaving landings? I would of thought they would snap pretty easily. What about wrapping the battens in glass/carbon fibre?

Hey Matthepp,

Nice looking job and the Full Sail IPA adds a very special touch!

I've given my boards a little bit of a beating but honestly haven't dished out full punishment because I don't want to hurt my body too much. I think glassing the struts could certainly add some strength but not sure it's needed (although it would allow for smaller lighter struts). I almost wonder if the weak point will be the board itself at the weld nuts or t-nuts at the bottom surface. I will report back if I break mine. So far my spleene board has a good 20 hours or so on it with no signs of trouble, and that includes some rough landings, waves and bumpy stuff.

I think the key is making smooth transitions. If you make super strong braces and stop them all at once, the board will be flexing the normal amount outside of the braces and not flexing at all where the braces are. This leads to very high stresses right where the braces end.

Matthepp's board looks great. Moving towards the center, it gradually increases in strength. The tapered ends of the supports will also help to gradually increase strength

Im definitely making one like this as soon as I can find a cheap board.

I had a chance to lightly test the homemade board in Punta Cana, DR last week. One duffel bag with one big kite, board, harness, pump, even the diapers: easy! 20 minutes (while drinking a cold beer) to assemble the board. Not much wind but I got in a few nice downwinders in amazing blue water. The board didn't even hint at any strain at the split, even during jumps, etc. Worst thing was the feel of a little extra water drag from the screw heads (or did I just imagine it?)

This is the ticket for a 'casual' kite trip where you want to take the gear along with the family/girlfriend/whathaveyou where you hope to score a session but don't want the hassle of oversize gear. I bumped into another completely skunked kiter at the airport hauling around a massive 6' board bag. Looked like a drag. Get out your saw!

!
No, you didn't imagine it. I felt the drag on my board when I did it. I'm thinking of trying to refine it by putting in inserts for my next project.

Does anybody know how to do that in twin tips and where to buy the inserts from?
