This leash arrangement is working safely for me for 5+ years now.
No hook on the side near my body and the spring goes over the gate of the clip on the chicken loop end.

Yeah, it does a good job.
Move the spring to one side to clip in, and over to the other for safety, and it stays put because of it's length, it provides tension to stay in place and keeps that clip closed and un-snag-able.
The Ocean Rodeo leash was already a favorite because of the easy safe fold over design on the other side with no clip, and how short it is for those that don't unhook.
Their chicken loops have always had that same simple fold over release and it is super simple and super safe and not effected much by weather and dirt/sand and salt and everything that fouls the more complicated designs.
The only challenge for OR has been how to update the bar system to have a below bar swivel.

Nice job with the spring.

I've gone for a snap shackle, I'll post a pic when it arrives.

I went for a 2” snap shackle as previously posted in this thread by ‘nikalaitzian’
It’s 316 Stainless steel, the 2” one is a similar overall size as the original Ozone clip and is only very slightly heavier.
I went for the fixed one, rather than the swivel as the eye for the thick rope is bigger.
Very easy to fit on this particular leash.

The leash is a shorty now supplied by Ozone;

As stated previously this is a one piece leash. When you hit the release the large rope loop is opened and everything flies away with your bar.
Ensure rope has free unobstructed movement to allow clear release from spreader bar, as per the photos on the item’s web site.
(Do not larks head the rope around your spreader bar!)

This seems to be a good cold weather/cold fingers solution too.

Not so good with cold fingers/gloves on;

My spring addition cost me $1.50 at Home Depot.
