I agree strut placement seems way far back, but as is such new design what do we know maybe?

First of all, that is not a fish! You all have been fooled! The tail is horizontal, so it's some sort of marine mamal. You can even see in the video where it has to come up for air

Seriously though, that's not even what a fish looks like from above. This is like a charicature of a fish. If it works, I'm all for it, but I don't think it has anything to do with a fish.

1. Classical natural design, why try to evolve perfection, adapt yes ..... Ricardo, magnifico, bravo.

I'm with Bradn on this. The only similarity between fish and hydrofoils is that they are both in the water. An airplane is designed to create lift as it moves through a fluid. A fish is designed to be neutrally bouyant and create thrust from moving it's tail (along with all the other staying alive stuff). I'd even say a bird is closer to the function of a hyrdrofoil than a fish.

Again though, if it works, I'm all for it!

And yet there's a reason a helicopter looks somewhat like a bug and a glider looks somewhat like an albatross.
The clever designer of the tuna fish (was that a French guy or some Italian ? ) made a creature that is fast, powerful, efficient and maneuverable in spite of having a fairly rigid stocky body. The delicious fat torpedo of the sea!

The hydrofish looks like a tuna to me, just not a static profile view. More of an adaptation, of a swimming tuna's shape, from an angle. Kind of like the angle of a hydrofoil while riding.
Tuna generate their power side to side, and much of their body is pretty rigid, as fish go, so a heeled over tuna shape and a hydrofoil seem to have a bit in common.
Flow condition, mechanical stress, etc. produce many examples of convergent evolution. Although the hydrofish has nice carbon "scales" I bet its shape may require less carbon than some others.
You could be a cynic and call the hydrofish a gimmick shape, but there are a lot of things about it that are brilliant, at least as a logical starting point for evolution to suit the task. The obvious first change being a serious diet, as the thinner hydrofoil gets its power through the mast not muscles, and next an asymmetry of the lifting profile...

I was only half joking though when pointing out it also looks like a way get the attention of a much bigger fish. It would be an interesting proposition to ride it out the golden gate at dusk, I think I will let someone else try that.

I'd ride out at dusk on a devise that looked like a Sailfish, if it was
as fast as a sailfish ; mostly because there ain't any sharks or anything
else that lives in the ocean, that could catch it. This draggy looking fish
will do near 60-knots !!

There's always Something to be learned from nature .

And i, "Like" toby's find here ; it Looks like it Should work !!

Hey Bradn,

Not being rude dude but, quick question: Your solution is?

Keep it short and sweet so those of us with limited technical expertise get it and the designers and manufacturers can explore it. All for everyone having a go for everyone to benefit.

Just think Ricardo overcame a slight problem of your 2K plus foil going to the bottom (make it float ), I still think he's onto something very achievable

Well you don't see people making a plane directly shaped as a bird, a truck as an elephant, a ferrari shaped as a cheetah etc...
But you do see people analyse them for similar properties that they are also looking to achieve, for instance, "What helps bird "x" glide long distances effortlessly"

Are you sure you are not thinking of someone else with the sinking foil?
but that is another discussion again.. All I will say is I prefer performance to the additional volume required to get a foil buoyant enough to float, but I don't doubt that there are people who want something ultra stable to learn on and float-able for ease of use rather than outright speed and stability around a racecourse..


On a off topic, the solid carbon wing I made had it's maiden fly yesterday and performed very well, super stiff and very stable
