My diy carbon foilboard......will it work?

Do you have any pictures of the wood one that broke? How long did it last?
Snapped at the front fuse? Just like Chistoff pointed out that it looked weak, je wss right.

I was thinking of building a wood foil to try some things out the possibly build a glass or carbon one.

How'd you eventually join the two halves of your mold?
any real difficult steps or recommendations you have for those willing to tackle a similar project?

To answer your orginal question
You can trim the lift needed to foil with the kite, board speed,or foot position. Can also adjust foil angle with shims so I'm confident you'll get it to work.
Just how easily, how stable, and how stiff are the sublties that may not be nailed immediately

But in my opinion anything you make yourself is fast stable and all around awesome....even when it isn't

I have put some pics together to give people some ideas on molds, and plugs.
The steps for mine was as follows:

Draw out the outline plan on paper, mast, fuselage

Draw onto balsa or Palawan and shape to your required shape and seal

Router into chipboard only half the depth of the balsa plug seal edges

Take mold of the plug

Use molds to reproduce a replica of plug takes lots of glass spilling over the edges of mold etc

Join to halves together with a layer of 12k plain weave and clamp

You will need to sand the halves flat,worst bit wear a sperm suit with respirator and face shield this stuff is bad shit to work with, you will itch for days if you don't.

Check for level and straight constantly.

Make the wings in the same way.

But suddenly the price for a hydrofoil, which is about the double (or more) of a "normal" kiteboard, is not that high anymore - when one sees the huge amount of work (and space) put into making it yourself

Having built many surfboards and windsurfboards and molds for fins myself in the early years, and later lots of carbon/glass molds for gliders, I really appreciate NOT to waste time on this now, but pay for it instead.

I know most are of the opposite opinion - but life is too short for building, unless it is a "dream" for you, and easy access

Really LOVE those who make foils themeselves - but just saying, that it is a LOT of work, so only if you are a cheapskate, OR (like most, luckily) love to build things yourself and have experience - it makes sense

On the other hand - they ARE quite fragile, so that is the major motivation to build yourself, and understandable

Thanks for the info Scuba! Can you explain the 3rd photo? I get that you're routing half the depth of the fus/mast in MDF so you have a backing for the mould, but the 3rd picture looks like you have added glass to the top of the plug? Or are you just showing us the outside of the mould after glassing it in the routed recess?

Nice technique. You could CNC something in foam to do a similar thing.

Not sure about the Tuttle head, was thinking of going flat plate it just opens up more options when it comes to boards?
Has any body got any ideas for a flate plate? Should I put wood or steel inside? Do I make a collar out of solid carbon?

The best is carbon, wood is second, metal will have delamination problem

im making one as well, patterns, molds then resin infusion. still making the wing and fuselage Patterns .... sand, sand and more sanding must have spent 40+ hours on it making two different sized front wings as well. will to live is slowly being lost, just hard finding the time but every hour is an hour closer.
