My foil from dreams to part in hand as i go

Postby tkettlepoint » Sun Apr 13, 2014 2:46 pm

Ok I had a dream a few years ago and never had the balls to do it until 5 months ago I figured what the hell I am going to try...
I am going to add pictures as I go here and my steps I have done.

I started by hand carving corecell to see if all my specs was what I was looking for.
Then I thought what the hell it looks good like that so I got my rusty ass off the couch and did some 3d CAD drawings.

It is now in the hands of my life time friend he is cnc the molds today for me..
I am luck I have more equipment at my hands then most. and been building custom boards with my other good friend for a lot of years not.

I will keep posting here as I go . Not going to hide anything , if I can help others some how I will in this topic..

I just want to thank a few people to date. Gunner for giving me some pointer, Frankie over on the French forum for show us the way on DIY, Skinner for cutting the molds, Jim for just being him, Bigdog for thoughts with thing, toby for such a great forum here,

And last My beautiful wife for putting up with me for the endless hours on the computer drawing the molds... She is the best person in the world .

Straight leading edges mean that you will not get rid of any seaweed or plastic bag or whatever that can be hit under underwater.
It will get stuck all the time.
Have you thougt about it ? Or maybe christal clear water in your area ?

Well, it will also perform better :thumb:

And seeing how many times you make "foil bombs" anyways, it might not be a problem in real life.

I also think seaweed or plastic bags are very likely to stick when they hit straight on the fuselage or mast anyways

I would not worry about it, and just be happy you have a foil with more performance and less drag (less induced drag) :naughty:

Looks really nice, I would recommend some anhedral on the main wing and diehedral on the tail wing.

thanks for the input

We have clear water here thanks to the zebra mussels but I am with PF it should work better with the leading edge close to being straight.
it is swept back 3 degrees ( not much but hopefully maybe clear anything if it happens)

One my all time fav airplanes is a P51 mustang and that is the out line I went with for the wings but with profiles Frankie has said time and time again work .
If the mustang can do what it does I think it is a good shape.

H I am cheeting for the anhedral on the main wing and diehedral on the tail wing, I will do that in the caskets in the press cheep and easier
for the molds to be flat and then press the anhedral and diehedrail like we do tips of snow boards. thinking about 40mm anhedral and 20mm diehedrail for the wings.

R I have 19oz uni, 12oz biax and 8 oz twill. everything is 12k t700 , resin will be forrest epoxy which need heat to cure..

thanks once again for the input

And that's what I love about this forum, posts like this. The home build projects that hold back no secrets by people with some skills trying to figure it out. I'm a bit of a builder and business owner in another field.

I'm pretty sure there's a future in sailing foils.

may better me or may harm me if I want to make foils to sell ;) if everyone starts making their own.

A little competition is good for the sport. It will drive the price down and improve the product at the same time.
