I'm a US citizen but I have good friends in Germany, Switzerland, UK, and France.

They often take very long vacations as opposed to what I can feasibly do. I get 15 days off a year and take some of it for holidays, some of it for good wind days, and some of it for when I need to get away from my job and head to the mountains with my motorcycle. It would be absolutely awesome if I were in a position to take a month long vacation like many of my European friends do (and I love it when they come visit), but alas I cannot.

Luckily I live in my own little paradise. I'm 10 minutes from the beach; we have decent, not awesome, but decent wind. Most of the locals are very friendly and outgoing and will do anything to protect the sport they love and the people that love it. Most of the visitors from over seas are very friendly, mature enough to ask about local coditions and spots, and I enjoy them coming to my area to enjoy the sport they love.

Dear Edoardo you are some confused ! US is the cheapest country for living and for vacation options while europe nearly most expensive .
Dear Starsky and Hutch yes I insult and I want to insult ,yust think who made last two wars in the world(iraq and libia) and killed so many people with reason other than gas!!!!!!!
YOU!!!!!!! followed by europeans also not to miss contracts !!!! but the point is not who forced or initiated or wanted the war .
Europeans knew and was clear that it was for gas while you have been filled of foolishness like freedom and democrecy for yustify it and you believed it !!!! why do not you go in siria now it is another country to fix up!!!!!!!!! but there is no gas .
another example ,try to buy freely a weapon in EU and yust to go around without using it ! we go right in jail.
you instead believe to what rifle lobby corporation says( not to mention ,unuseful)
in fact punctually killings all around your country!!!! almost never happened in our civilized countries .
you are driven from corporates that are driven from earnings ,it's a dog chasing his tail .
this all influence living style ,consequently" kite vacations cultures"
dear Toby you are not free of talking ,you are in the rule and in the role of the forum ,do not strain too much to give correct answers,be free and try to face a wave ,you will discover another sensation when the monster is behind you ready to eat you !!!!!
I did silly yumping for years!!!! my god !! so boring now!!!!! go on follow the sport !!!! it is drug!!! really

well..., i'm EU citizen too, just happen to living up north of you.
you worked for 23 years as the flight attendant on air lines. i worked on merchant ships for 15 years and had pleasure and honor to visit lots of ports all over the europe, africa, asia and americas.

i can say from my own experience that people are all alike generally. differences are mainly in the standards of living, some minor deviations in local laws and traditions, wealth and may be a little bit of the climate influence.

i had my share of traveling, i've seen pretty much it all, now you have to pay me to travel abroad. last time i had work related travel to Dubai, i had to sit crouched for 6+ hours in the plane along with the russian tourists in the seat, designed for, to put it politically correctly, "industry standard 75kg kiter".
as i said people are all alike generally, but biggest difference between the nations i noticed was difference between northern european and mediterranean european countries. i mean, what a hell is wrong with you with the siesta crap? i'm ok when construction workers having a brake because the mid day heat, but why the office workers and store clerks have several hours "heat" brakes in the air conditioned offices, while air conditioning appliances are sill working (so much for green thinking)? we in the northern part of europe don't have a siestas, we don't go skiing in the middle of the day for several hours just because of we have so little day light! you in the south close your production facilities for three or four weeks in the summer, what-a-hell with that!?
good luck with this socialism...

i'm sorry for you had a crappy job for 23 years. but i think that is you who should've figure it out rather quicker that this job is not for you.

and please spare us from the history lessons. it feels strange (at least) when italians are trying to liken to the ancient romans history to their own history. we learn history in the schools too and we can watch history channel as well. italy is not direct ascendant of the rome.
so, even if italy didn't have "officially" slavery, you did bombed the ethiopia with mustard gas while geneva convention was already signed. so much for chivalry.

and finaly, since you started this political crap, about the oil and gas... your favorite prime minister berlusconi signed corrupt deals with the russia for gas purchase. now your government and your bigger national corporations pay for russian occupation of its neighboring independent country. and now say hello to the France (same socialistic government)! they now finish the attack helicopter carrier ship for the russia as we exchanging posts here.
so what about war mongering?

so piccio, spare me from your demagogy

It is always interesting to read the posts that both sides present and to honestly evaluate how we actually do things. I am blessed to have a job with lots of time off, 5 weeks of holidays, 22 additional days off as floaters and lots of overtime that I can bank for more paid leave. I have done both styles of vacationing and see the benefits of both. What I do see that really separates the two sides is attitudes in general! As a whole, Canadians tend to be courteous and don't like to offend others (sometimes we are too tolerant). For the most part we fully embrace the what's around the next corner vacationing but will gravitate to the endless supply of beer vacationing as well. I do think that the EU people do have the work to live attitude worked out well but some could spend some of that quality time learning to be less demanding! Not all but some.

Hey Eree, you don’t know what you are talking about do you? There are is Monday to Friday siestas in Spain and I bet in any Southern European country, if you would have traveled as you claim you will you would know this fact. Greeks work much longer than Germans, and Spanish than Swedish and Denmark is in the bottom list.

http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablo ... king-hours

Is not about staying in the office but being productive, and northern Europeans do that well. Corruption takes a big toll on Southern Europe, is not that people is not willing to work hard. You know Nordics have the longest vacation time, highest taxes in the world and enjoy the longest vacations right? They are also the closest to real Socialism that you have in the world. In Europe old ghosts never seem to disappear, very sad and why Europe will never surpass North America.

Piccio: US international policies and North American people are 2 very different things, please don’t mix them, no need to bring those topics out of nowhere to this thread.

Now lets talk about kites please!

Hm, one should really understand this: in some countries the job market does not exist. Take Japan for example - working for one and only one employer. So, all said of changing employers.

The northern EU is resources rich. Mineral resources, oil, etc...Hence one of the highest standard on the Planet. The fact that you can be a student in Sweden and be paid for studying is unheard in so called "socialistic" countries of southern EU. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It is unheard of paid compulsorily paternity leave as in Norway. Or paid 2 days off per week for a working mothers. And soooooo much more which 'socialist' countries of south can only dream off:) Because they can't afford. Simple. Australia can afford all of the above BUT we get nothing.

Than we come to the BIGGEST difference of all:

- a friendship and a family ties.

The southern EU, northern EU and USA can't be compared on any of two.

In the US you call a friend a person you have something in common. Like, you like kite surfing - friend.
In other words you make friends willy-nilly.

In southern EU friends are not something taken as lightly. Friendship is something earned and respected. You do not say to the a friend NO. Period.

In America and Australia (and xyz including north EU) you guys move around all the time. Its hard to keep strong ties when you are always on the go. You also need to be able to make friends easily in all the new places you live. Hence you make numerous, casual, friends.

In the southern EU ppl live forever in one and only one suburb (even the same street). You depend on people more than you do in the states. Calling someone your friend means you need to know you can depend on them.

Now just think about the family ties...:)

And this my 'friends' is the main issue with all southern EU states. Or the US.
