Freestyle with big kites

Postby adamharr » Mon May 05, 2014 4:24 am

Hi guys, i was wondering if it's possible to do wakestyle (kite static) tricks with big kites (17) in under 10 knots.
Will the kite generate the enough apparent wind to get speed and pop the trick?
I am only 65 kg and go out with 6 knots in my race board.
Would like to throw some long lines and get my boots on with 8 knots or so..

Any tips?
Cheers

Yes you can!
We had a team competition and wind got light...my team mate Mario Rodwald too his dads Dyno Race kite 17m...and won our heat with it...he even landed a kiteloop handle pass!!!

And since you don't use the kite to jump and just keep it low, it is perfect, since it just sits right there and pulls!

Try it!

It should be possible at your weight, I am 85 and need 10to 12 knts to be able to pop tricks on a wake style board.
Kite choice is important, A race kite will be harder to use as they need the board speed to create power, but if you are super skilled it is possible. (there is a video of Andy Yates on a Crono)
If you are a mere mortal then something like the Blade Fat Lady is perfect.

Thanks guys will give it a go on my 17 and thinking about getting edge 19 or chrono 18.
The Zephyr is great for 10 knots but pulls like a tractor.
The 17 Edge gets me going too and has better upwind.

Agree, kite just pulls at 45 degree or so.

with your weight i think a 15m should do it, you will be overpowered too soon with a 17.
I was doubting between 15 and 17 and now im happy i choosed 15

This is a problem, I normally ride a 12 or 13m kite that i can start getting pop on in about 13 knots. I've tried my friends 15 and 17m kites and they definitely give you a little bit extra low end, but I haven't found it to get me started more than 1 or 2 knots earlier. As you get lower in wind speeds the power starts to decrease very quickly.

Hi Dylan, i dont agree, ive ridden in ridiculous winds, once you get going the apparent wind kicks in and you go with almost no wind at all. For me the contra 15m makes the trick i would be overpowered too soon in a 17 and also is too slow.
