We are headed there May 10 to 17. Totally worth driving for 4 days. I am driving from Upstate NY. Basically take I-81 South all the way. You're welcome to join us and we'll help you out.

I highly recommend Sam Bell at Tightlinez Charters if you are looking for lessons. His boat is right next to Jays (Outerbanks Kiting). Really any of those guys (Ty, Jay, Sam) would be a good choice. Sam used to be the head of instructor program at REAL and now he is doing his own thing.

We are headed down from Toronto May 31st for a week in Avon... something called the Triple S is going on that week ...
Round trip in 4 days ... not my cup of tea but hey I am getting old so maybe the 20 something me would have said go for it. IMO if I am going to make the drive then minimum 5 days of riding to make it worth the trip. That being said Hatteras is such a good place to learn, a few good sessions there is well worth the effort and will help push along progression and confidence quickly.
Stayed upwind for the first time at Hatteras ... won't ever forget that day.

finnkc, I am thinking the same thing now, maybe replan to get 5 days in, was trying to take advantage of long weekend, maybe I will wait until the summer. Does it get busy in the summer there, or same all year round?

it doesn't really matter, there are so many different places to kite you can usually find somewhere where there is no one or 1-2 other kiters.

Busy is a relative term, there's so much room sound side and ocean side it's no big deal. Prime location houses are harder to rent from late-June to mid-August. And stay away from the Avon Food Lion after high noon on Saturdays. Ty at kite Hatteras does book up early, but he's a great guy, give him a call, he'll do his best to accommodate you. If you like being on or in the water, kiting, bodyboarding, SUP, fishing etc it's a great place, in fact, I can't think of a better place in North America if you want to learn to kite and like the water/beach.

There is a smaller one by the private house, there is a Pizza place just south of it and a cemetery to the north
the water tower is also not too far off to the north. It's perfect just for a van.
