board bag recommendation?

Postby plummet » Wed Jun 11, 2014 11:35 pm

Hey bros'

What do you recommend for a TT board bag for international travel?

Wheels or no wheels?

Give me some options.

Wheels don't add much weight but are a definite bonus for ease of carrying...

I have a Dakine slider bag and a Dakine Club Wagon. The slider fits a twintip with a kit wrapped around it. The Club Wagon fits two twin tips, two kites, harness, wetsuit. etc. It ROLLS. Its under the 158cm limit of standard baggage sizing and Ive never had an issue. Only problem is keeping it under weight because it can hold so much! My last trip I bought somr luggage straps and strapped my surfboard bag on top and rolled it around with no issues!

I go for wheels, Light weight, well made and strong.
Weight is the enemy for airline travel.
Try one that says 'Golf' down the side of it, it may help one day.

I got one of these;

I like the heavy straps over the zip.

Go for the size you want now and may want in the future, it'll save some cash.

I put pipe insulation around the ends of the board to try and help protect it, - when it falls off the conveyer....

I had a Dakine one many years ago that the straps actually pulled in a way to effectively split the zipper!

Good luck with your choice.

Yes wheels. We just purchased the crazyfly bags. Good padding reasonable size. We have two bags and travel with two boards. 5 kites. 2 harnesses. 3 bars. 2 shorty wetsuits. Fits perfectly. With room for repair kit and pump.

I just bought this bag on a good sale.

http://www.kitepaddlesurf.com/Liquid-Fo ... 128011.htm

I tend to fly to the Caribbean and Central America, which is the sweet spot for Spirit Airlines. Spirit has this fun policy that's basically a Go Big or Go Home luggage policy - you get two surfboards for the price of one if you can fit it into one container. No size or weight restrictions. In exchange for $100 one way instead of the normal $30.

Anyways the bag is monster sized, it can actually fit two real surfboards of 6'3"or up to three twin tips on the larger bag (the bag has dividers for three boards inside or two boards and one for non-board). It has heavy duty wheels to make carrying all of that gear easier too :)

I can fit all of my gear - 145 cm TT, 165 cm Mako King, 12m/16m kite quiver, two pumps,. harness, impact vest, wetsuit, booties, rashguards and boardshorts, etc. Funny thing is, since my boards are thin and not volumetric surf boards, it LOOKS like there are two full sized surf boards in it.

I bought this bag specifically to milk the Spirit policy since I travel on them so much. I think any other airline would rape me.

Whatever you get, I am a big fan of wheels. I'm a big guy, 6'0" 225 lbs, extremely athletic and I get tired of hauling gear around by hand, especially when you get these 1-2 mile walks in an airport (grrr MIA).
