Re: Recognizing a local hero - 78 year old rider

Postby KiteCulture » Sun Jun 08, 2014 2:20 pm

Thanks. Fred inspires people with his riding and great attitude. He's not trying to save the world, he just wants to ride as often as possible because he's never sure how many sessions he has left. He's very young in spirit, but considers himself lucky to be able bodied.

I wonder if Mr. Kerry deserves his own thread? This one is about my man Fred.

In the wind of that recognition of a local hero, I'd like to recognize John Kerry who at 71 often kites in my local spot alongside many of us newbies. Although he is the secretary of state and often has to be in a different country every day, saving the world, he still comes back to Nantucket to inspire us and make us believe in the brighter future!
I actually did spend an hour and half with John Kerry ten years ago in Puerto Rico teaching him how to stay up wind, since he knew a little how to kite but was not very confident. So I was in Puerto Rico for a photo shoot at the time with AIRUSH and they asked me if I could help him.
I had body guards all over me.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Fred as well, truly a young man trapped in an aging body lol. Great bunch of guys at Oli!!!!!

Keep that area open and keep the knobs from getting it closed up to kitting.

It's truly a great spot!

88 year Poul Rassmusen from Denmark died in 2012 while kitesurfing after kiting and windsufing for many many years, a true legend.
On this video from 2010 he is 85 http://youtu.be/9E1O_P4OVuM

Hey guys. I'm glad Fred is inspiring others to begin or to keep gng. This is what it's all about, and what Fred reminds us all of. Life is short, be thankful for what you have and make the most of it. Fred spreads the stoke at the beach every time, and he's a great powered rider. Love riding knowing that he's on the water.
