Gybing Tips Please

Postby Robsw6 » Sun Jul 13, 2014 10:29 pm

First, I am just starting to try to do non-planing gybes by sheeting out/slowing down so that the board is comfortably in the water, I am then turning the board downwind at zenith and just getting onto the other tack, but then falling off

Any tips/help would be appreciated :D

I am no expert but I am successfully making most of mine... when I touch down.

Ride somewhat toward downwind (maybe 45 degrees off downwind)
Bring your board down to the water.. as you go more downwind this will happen.
Move your back foot out of the rear strap and put it just in front of that strap.
Get your weight forward (mostly on your front foot).
Quickly move your back foot forward into the empty front foot strap
.. and immediately move your old front foot to anywhere on the back of the board

(At this point you may be riding toeside)

Downloop the kite while turning the board totally downwind and keep turning until you are on the new tack. The downloop makes things easier because it gives you a burst of speed. You are done. :D

Start by doing the footswitch before you turn the board and downloop. As you get better you can do everything together and ideally spend a minimum amount of time with your board touching the water. I have described how I do it on a 3 strap board but it is the same strapless and probably easier.

Have fun
 CG

Here is what I do:
1: turn up wind to slow down.
2: turn kite before board,
3: turn board in a smaller radius than a surfboard.

What Gunnar said :) You're probably missing the down loop? That's usually what stop you from falling into the water. It feel sketchy at first, but remember that you're less powered on a foil. Just try and "go with it" rather than fighting the pull from the down loop.

if you are struggling with the foot switching just try jibing to toeside without the switch. I still can't pull off a foot switch, with my small MHL board, but can make s-turns from heelside toe side staying on the foil with downloops. it's a really fun way to get downwind fast and not that hard. I got it after about 15 sessions after learning to foil on straight line consistently.

Managed to do surface gybes today - but not touch downs or fully planing.

I tried to do down loop touch gybes, but every time i moved my feet whilst planing, I destabilised the board & fell off !!!! I think weight may be a factor !!!! `will keep trying & thanks for the tips :D
