Twin tip fin sizes

Postby Oldpeople » Fri Jun 13, 2014 3:48 pm

I was out the last two days riding my 2011 dyno 13m. First day with 135 crazy fly board and the next with a 130 old north board. First day had slightly less wind and from time to time I was getting blown off my edge and had a harder time keeping an edge for a pop. The second day the wind was a bit more but I had no problems at all with keeping edge. I know the small board made a difference, though I didn't expect it to make as much difference as it did, but also on the smaller board I have bigger fins, say about 40% bigger. It got me wondering about fin sizes. What size fins are people using trying to ride with bigger air style kites and tricks? Anyone had experiences like mine? How much a factor does fin size make?

Good question.

But I assume the size, shape and flex of a board rather makes the difference.

But you could test it and chance fins on one side of the board only.
On both boards, then you can see which side of the board and it's fins have the most grip.

Of course that is always the problem. There are so many variables. Even switching off boards or fins the conditions never stay exactly the same making small differences awfully hard to clearly demonstrate . The north board is 5 cm smaller and a cm or 2 narrower so maybe that really accounts for the difference but the fin size was significantly larger as well.
By the way the wind down here in San Andres has been strong this last couple of weeks. Better than in January and February so if you make it back to Cartagena or here it looks like it might be a very good June and july

Oh what I'd give to find a 13m 2011 dyno...

13m 2011's are rare. I needed a new center strut bladder and talked to Airtime for a bladder and they were sure that north didn't make a 13m in 2011. if you look at north's manuals they don't show a 13m. I do love it and I was really lucky. I bought what was advertised as a 2012 13m dyno and when I got it, it was actually a 2011. Lucky me!

Get in touch with powerkiteshop...they actually get the north factory in ummmm Austria I think to make a ridgi didge north bladder with correct specs. I got a 2011 16m center bladder made up but alas I was able to fix my old one, so it's now a spare.
