I tried it once to take a bar as hand luggage. At the security check they pulled me out and didn't let me take it since there is metal on the inside and you could use it as a weapon...
Exactly- friends of mine experienced the very same, bar not allowed.

So there is a risk as it seems some will allow it others will stop you

Metal on the inside? :) What about a walking stick? A belt? Chopsticks? High heels?

Gee, I live in a country where a slingshot is forbidden by the law. Can't complain than...

But, yes, they did disassemble my pump to see what's inside:) Take a pump with plastic shaft!

Going away this week, will be interesting...

Most carriers allow 2 carry-on bags per passenger...
1st bag ... max dimensions 14 inches x 21 inches x 9 inches (overhead bin)
2nd bag (personal bag) ... purse, computer bag, small tote, etc... (under seat)

In my 1st bag, I'll cram in the kite I'm most likely going to use, harness, & bar.
In the 2nd bag, board shorts, t-shirts, slippers.

Then I'll check a golf bag with other kites, board(s), pump and anything else under 50lbs.

I figure if the airline loses or delays my golf bag, I still have a kite, harness, & bar. I can rent a board, borrow a pump, and I'm good to kite.

BTW...I've never been hassled by TSA.

But once when traveling with another kite-bud. They wouldn't let my friend have the bar in his carry-on bag (could be used as a weapon BS) yet they never said anything about my bar in my bag.

Average kite 6 lbs but bulky

Average bar 2 lbs and easy to pack but don't want to be hassled over it

So I'll pack a kite on carry on

Kite harness not heavy but bulky. I'll try wrap around back pack.

Never had to carry on but then there are 2 of us traveling. I get 2 kites, 1 board, pump, fins, tools, 1 bar in the kite-golf bag (under 50 lbs), and the other bar, harness, go in a large bag on wheels we check in. Carry-on take some close and laptop, and camera.

We signed up for the carrier's visa card and it gave us a free checked bag for both of us, and some passes to their airport club (nice when the flight is delayed).

The baggage rules keep changing so you never know if next time they are going to get you for some extra charge they dreamed up. Last time, the counter person was talking like they were going to charge extra on the golf bag and then when challenged they talked to someone more senior and they said there would be no charge.

I would love a split board for travel and get it all in 2 large wheeled carry-ons, but the cost and performance have held me back.

I've been able to lay a 9m and 13m flat then roll up as one kite and stuff into 1 kite bag as carry on. It weighs a lot but there is not a weight limit on carry on, just a size limit and it fits into the overhead unless you are on a prop puddle jumper plane and they make you gate check it, which does not cost you any money.

My friend has been able to carry on 1 kite, 1 bar and 1 harness all stuffed into his kite bag which is quite easy to do.
