Aruba is August

My wife and I want to go on a kitesurfig trip in early August where there is good consistent wind and shallow flat water for learning. I hear Aruba is good in August - is this true???

Not necessarily in my experience in August and September. Tropical weather and changes that come in that time of year can mess the trades up. I went in late July, early August for my first time to the ABC islands. I had wind for a few days and then it pretty much died. I had been told that I might happen and it did. Normal weather patterns are drifting so I would check with locals on the island for their take this summer. When the trades are on the wind can be excellent however in those latitudes.

how about the gorge/hood river. strong consistent winds in the summer and the 'sandbar' area is pretty shallow & flat water. Lots of instructors and lessons available as well...

I would say that Aruba is not very good for learning. It's not shallow. It's deep water and off shore gusty winds. The instructors follow you around in small boats with outboard engines. I got my wife a lesson there and her instructor body dragged with her straight off shore out about a mile or more before a boat went and picked them up. However, my wife did enjoy her lessons and if you are leaning I recommend taking a lesson from Fernando or Helena at Xtreme Winds. Great people!

If you don't think you need a lesson, make sure you tell the school guys on the beach to keep an eye on you. If they need to pick you up they only charge like $20 or something like that...

Very fun island! Everyone is super friendly. It's one happy island!
