Has the Liquid Force Fish gotten any better?

Postby davesails7 » Sun Aug 03, 2014 7:43 pm

I'm really interested in the Hydrofoil that Liquid force is coming out with soon (info here: viewtopic.php?f=196&t=2384727). They're attaching it to the really cheap Kite Fish which is good because it will keep cost down, but looking through old reviews, sounds like the board is heavy and generally not very good. In the hydrofoil thread they said they will sell the foil with or without the board.

So I'm wondering if newer versions got any lighter and/or better in the waves? I'm not sure if they even still make a kite version with straps though because I can't find it on the website.

I already have a Slingshot Space Pickle wakesurfer version that I love. From the reviews I've read, it seems like I would never choose to ride the LF Fish over the SP, so maybe I'm better off drilling some holes and getting some stick on straps for the space pickle? Probably add a layer of glass around the foil area too for reinforcement. Seems kinda silly to have and carry around two separate boards all the time if I could have one that does both.

it has straps on it. keep in mind the kitefish isn't a "surfboard" per se, it's a wakesurfer that's a light wind, inexpensive fun board. so if you are looking for a light wind, high-volume kite surfboard you might be more interested in the 4'10 Little Phatty

Yeah, the slingshot SP is also a cheap wakesurfer for lightwind that people do like (including me). Just seems like no one really liked the kite fish...

Do you like it?

It seems like the same idea as the Spleene Zone, surf shape with twin tip construction. I've never ridden the Zone, but people loved it. So it is possible to make a surf shape with twin tip construction that people like. Wondering if that actually happened with the later versions of the kite fish.

The LF Kitefish is going to be much more durable.
If I was gonna screw a foil to a board, I would use a board that is up to that task.
The Space Pickle I had, developed a huge delam bubble under the skin and it had to be cut in two to get a warranty replacement.
When you look at what is inside the Space Pickle you realize how fragile some surfboards can be.
You are not really going to ride the board for long when you foil, it's just something to plane until you lift off, I would choose something durable.
A friend of mine had the Carafino and the board delamed quite a lot also.
I think the connection point of the foil is a fairly high stress spot.

Thats a good point. The twintip construction is a lot more durable for the foil to bolt on. Thats why im thinking of a shinnster or a spleene zone instead. The shinnster isnt much more expensive.

All the kite fish reviews seem to be "well, it isnt very fun to ride, but it is cheap." Im sure it would work great with the foil, but I like the idea of using a board that works well on its own also. I guess it depends on how much of a price difference there is for foil only or complete.

Shinnster is $599, I think.
If I were doing a foil, I would just screw the foil to one of my old twintips.
Or you can buy an old TT for cheap.
One of those old, too long to be useful anymore, twins like a Lightwave 179.
Or an old Naish Sky Pirate directional, they were built like tanks.

Not a foiling expert (yet)... But before chosing a board for my foil i asked on the french forum and they all recommended avoiding a board with flex for foiling. It semms it makes the control of the foil much more technical...
I ended up adapting an old north skimfish. It does the job so far.

The Shinnster is flexy.
The LF Kitefish is pretty firm.

I think you need at least some volume.
Not all hydrofoils float, so the board might need a little extra buoyancy
