2nd Board - vacuum tube issues

Postby Danydan » Tue Sep 02, 2014 12:23 am

Hello everyone, I finally made my second board (based on a spleen door and with dimension of 160 X 45) but the tube from the vacuum pump was inserted on the board and significantly marked the board during the vac process... See attached picture:

This is too bad as beside this the board was close to perfect (IMO at least  ) The top part of the board was carbon, 2 layers of fiberglass cloth, cotton, peel ply and breather.

I think that I will sand the tip to get the whole thing even (it is approx 1/4 thicker than the rest of the tip) but I fear that I will go through the cotton.... What are my options to finish the board beside hot coating (which I am not sure I want to invest time in) as I want to get it done the soonest?

Would adding cotton (dark color for example) only on the tip (as opposed to the whole board) and époxy with vinyl vacuum give a descent finish or will the second layer of cotton will show and/or be significantly thicker than the rest of the board?

What about paint, would it be better than re-vacuum with vinyl? Can I seal the paint only with epoxy (as I was planning to put epoxy on the whole board to change the finish given by the breather)?

Could I use black marker to try to mask the cotton that will be sanded?

Any other options?

Cheers,

Why don´t you keep it? it looks great. Just pass your black marker on it, and write it "Curve" that is your Logo :thumb:

skim it with epoxy and wet sand it out... buff and it. you will be able to hide it .. pretty easy

Ok,

Take a razor blade and just scrap the excess epoxy. Don't cut into it, tho.
Than what terrie says...

For the next board extend your peel ply , breather cloth past the board and have your tube there. No chance of board marks.
