Surf Expo show Day 1 - Liquid Force Foil Fish

Postby sbckiteboard » Fri Sep 05, 2014 11:22 am

Down here at Surf Expo in Orlando, Florida with SBC Kiteboard magazine for the annual kiteboarding tradeshow. One of the biggest buzzes on Day 1 is the new Liquid Force Foil.

Image

The shape is what Liquid Force figured out to be the best recreational and easy to learn on design that doesn't have the limiting factors of the earlier designs that were easy to use but wouldn't go fast, or fast designs that didn't plane off at really low speeds. What Liquid Force decided on was a good all-around design. Everything packs into a small bag making it easy to travel with. The beauty of the system is you can also unbolt the foil and ride the Foilfish/Kitefish with thrusters like a regular surfboard.

The new foil is built primarily from extruded Aluminum with the goal of keeping the costs down and making the replacement of parts easier. The complete set up will be retailing for $1595 US. It's not carbon that explodes and has catastrophic failure and then you are into a new expensive carbon piece. If you break one part you can buy a new aluminum fuselage, new aluminum mast or a new plate. Carbon wings will also be available.

Why foil? Team rider Jason Slezak describes the sensation of foiling to the feeling of riding bottomless powder all the time!

$1600 sounds reasonable. I was going to buy one of the MHL foils just before they increased their price by ~50% last year ($1600 to $2500 I believe)

All the videos look pretty impressive.

When will they be available?

What are the standard wings made of? What is the advantage of the Carbon wings?

I checked these out at the Expo yesterday and LF is taking the most realistic route to affordable foils for the masses. This kit also breaks down into a bag for travel, and the LF Kitefish can be finned up and ridden with or without the foil.
They will have replacements parts and upgrade-able fins, so why would I buy a full carbon board for 500-1000 more that is toast after 1 impact? For that kind of money, I'd rather have something durable that I can have fun on without worrying. I would think that with this platform, they will be eventually offering a few fin setups for cruising, performance, etc.
1595 including the board is going to be the price, and they will be available from LF dealers around Christmas time.

On a side note, the new LF bar is really nice too (will be available in a few months). I am looking forward to getting both ASAP.

That sucks. I made the mistake of learning to ride my first raceboard in the winter. Lots of time in the water. Looks like I'll be learning to foil in the winter too :shake:
