La coche venezuela - kiteboarding

Postby Theboy » Thu Mar 12, 2015 10:51 am

Hi Kiters

So finally I made decision.
I was asking you where to go in april, I had few destinations and some your informations.
I will go to la coche venezuela. It looks very good and also price is fine, wind too :-)

Does someone have experiences with la coche and what is the best way to go there?
To caracas from Europe then to Margarita and with boat to la coche ?
If yes, then in which date you was there ?

Thank you again

Jozef

Hurry up Jozef, before some Nobel Prize turns the country into mayhem. The American Administration has gained loads of experience with that sort of regime change operations, after Afghanistan, Iraq, Lybia, Ukraine... You need the full list?
Sorry Toby, this is not so much a political comment as expressed concern about paradisiac places turning into yet another hell on earth.

First this is 4 year old information. Coche was a great place. talk to Chris Valentine at Coche kiteboarding (I think that is the name of his web site, just google it) He can tell you current conditions. I think you still have to fly to Caracas first, then margarita. The town of El Yaque is close to the airport. arrange for a room there for the first night. Then take a water taxi over to Coche. There are several all inclusive resorts right on the beach next to the kiteboarding area. Their prices on the internet were very high but when you talked to them in person they were very very low. Now with the black market rate for B's at over 200 to the $ I bet you can make some great deals. Find a hotel and then go back on the water taxi and return the next day. Chris will know the accommodation prices and options and how you can go about changing money. I was there for a couple of months in the winter. not sure what it will be like in april.
I spent a lot of time in Venezuela with no problems but things are worse now. It is a place where you need to be very very careful. Coche is a little island and hopefully is still ok.

If you can avoid Caracas you should, one year I did but I was coming from Aruba

You need do an island hopper to Margarita and boat Taxi to El Coche

If you stay at El Yaque area you have more options. There are boats that will take you upwind and you can do downwinders sometimes w groups.

And you can also do transfers to El Coche on a daily basis

In Caracas fly in during daytime and catch do island hopper same day

Be extremely careful including taxis,

I quit going there for safety reasons, health , last time there I got a stomach flu going around the whole island, and scarcity of food. They ran out of bread and bottled water. Yet it's one of my favorite places. But don't need the hassles

Good luck. Max
Ps. El Coche wind is off shore

TheBoy

I've looked into it a bunch of times and looks like a great alternative. Lots of info here on how to do it. I think fly into Fortaleza and ride bus north for a few hours

The other option is Dominican Republic, I've been there also a great option, lots of kite centers right on beach. Also lots of info here on posts

Good luck. Keep posting

Max
