Punta Trettu

This famous spot has perfect flat water and can hold many kiters at the same time.
Big shallow areas allow perfect conditions for beginners.
When the school is operating there is a rescue boat, since winds are offshore if you want to enjoy the flat water. Check with the school before you go out.

It works in SE and NW wind and always offers flat water, since it is a spit into the ocean.

Quiet a walk to the spot. But well worth it!

If you want waves, people go to Fontanamare.

First time I have been to a kite spot and not seen one twintip ;-)
The wind is pretty onshore though, but the waves look fun.

Stagno Di Mistras

Another awesome spot is this lake. Shallow allover with knee deep and flat water.
NW and SE both work here. Perfect for beginners and riders learning tricks.

Get the free app "SeaConditions".
Excellent wind forecast app for mediterrian sea!
And a guy told me it has the best forecast for Sardinia as well.

Dear Toby
thanks a lot to promote the kite in Sardinia with your article!!!

about Punta Trettu, I've to inform you that things changed.
in Italy..like other countries where the sea is warm..
we need a authorized kite zone if you want to start from the beach.
in punta trettu there isn't any authorized kite zone

till the the practice of kitesurf was from few kites was ok, it was just tolerated by authority.

the point is that in the lagoon there is a channel for boat transit (up to 20 mt of lenght)
so not only there isn't a authorized kite beach, but isn't possible to get because
the strait is just 1.3 km wide and just few dozens of kite block the boat transit in the lagoon.
and last year Coastguard came many times and gave fines (almost 150€ for kiters)
you can see from this photo ( 39° 6'38.18"N 8°26'14.31"E) that the boat channel is just at 82 mt from the place where everybody set up
and start the kite.

Image
here are the contact of coastguard so everybody can contact and check the truthfulness of this information.

http://www.guardiacostiera.it/capitaner ... .cfm?id=87
santantioco@guardiacostiera.it
ucsantantioco@mit.gov.it

(better to write in italian)

and about the question of the school that is there...simple they opened without checking with Coastguard if in this area was possible to open a kite school.

all the best

Thx for the info!

This is bad news, since I think it is the best spot in Sardinia!

So, the whole area is closed? Or if you ride you might get fined?

Will the local school work on a permission?

Thx for any further info!!!

Dear Toby

about the school, in general in Italy you don't need an authorization to open a kite school, because often are sporting association. if you want to kite starting from the beach you need an autoirzed kite zone (like you saw in porto pollo, la cinta, siniscola etc.), so usually the school ask to coastguard and to municipality set up a kite zone.

In punta trettu there isn't any authorized kite beach, and isn't possible to set up due for the channel for the boat, and the practice of kitesurf cannot stop the transit of boat in that area (sail boat, fisherman boats, pontoons and small yacth up to 25 mt).

about the question on the school that you saw..in my point of view they just start their job without checking/asking to coasguard about problem or restriction on the practice of kitesurf.

about your opinion that is the best spot in sardinia...it isn't very safe too shallow water. your portal is full of post about terrible accident in shallow water, and last august one guy had a displaced open fracture of the tibia and peroneal bone. he was almost to die for a heavy bleeding because the broken bone cut the calf.

About authorized kite zone in south sardinia there is ony Porto Botte, Porto Pino (from july 2014 - i set up this kite zone), Maddalena spiaggia in the city of Capoterra close to Cagliari.

from june end of september in sardinia and in general in Italy we can kite only starting from authorized kite zone.
it's better for everybody that want to spend a kite holiday in Sardinia to check with the local office of Coastguard (www.guardiacostiera.it) if there is an authorized kite beach.
to avoid the problem and surprise that last year dozens of tourist, that went in holiday in punta trettu, got a fine from coastguard.

all the best

Thx a lot for the explanation.

So, what about the non summer time?
Can you kite everywhere? No kite zone needed?

you are welcome.

about the "no summer time", I mean after 30 September - 30 May.
we can play kitesurf without the need of start from a authorized kite zone.

that's rule is for whole Italy. in some area that is very touristic the "summer time" can be May-October
so in that case better to check with authority.

I'd like to underline that in may and october the weather is pretty good so it's possible to have in this time people on the beach that are swimming or just having a sunbath. so we can play kitesurf but we must stay far from people, and if there are swimmers we must stay (jumps) at 300 mt from the beach.
often kiters forgot that in some countries (in generla in europe) there are rules that we need to avoid accident, like we must stop at the red traffic light, slow down the car speed in the city center...

but often kiters believe that the sea and beaches are the old far west.

cheers
