chrono v2 9m or 11m?

Postby coleman » Thu Feb 04, 2016 9:03 pm

need some help on the windranges of these two sizes. to be used on hydrofoil and inland gusty conditions.

i've seen my friend on a 10m speed and LF foil fish kiting in 5-10kts and he weighs 240lbs.

i weigh 155 and am looking for this kite to be my primary kite so am leaning towards the 9m as i think the low end will be sufficient for our light days which are 5-12kts.

our medium wind is about 12-20 and higher windy days go 20-25+, for which i would use a smaller lei.....

not looking to race, just dont want to be overpowered when a 20kt gust line hits.

is the 9m the right size?

This isn't really an answer to your question, but I'm a similar size and here's my quiver.

Taaroa Sword 2 foil
Velocity 9m inflatable - 12 to 22kts with foil, up to 28 with TT
Sonic FR 11 - ^same wind range if racing, or I can go down to 8 to 10kts if just putzing around
Elf Joker 5 15m - 8 to 15kts

It's too unstable to go out under 8 kts here, but that might give you some comparison. It's mostly about what you can keep in the air, and I just think a 10m would be really hard to keep in the air in conditions under 10kts.

What is the average wind you aim for as the low-end?

Had de chrono V1 9m and now the V2 9m and under an average wind of 8kn the 9m just hasn't enough power to get you an the foil. At least that is my experience with the Zeeko Makaira and now Levitaz Aspect 3 with 65kg. You can foil trough the lulls, but don't stop because you cannot get up on the foil and keeping the 9m flying under 8kn is a pain.

I am more aiming on racing now so I don't push the lower limits of the 9m anymore, the 13m V2 is my weapon for anyting under 13kn with and is even stable to fly when there is not enough wind to foil when the wind drops under 5-6kn.

thanks for the replies,

given the cost of these kites i'm having to choose one size at the moment. my tendency is to pick the size that i would be able to use most often which would be 9m as the winds i typically kite in are in the 12-20kts range

but if the 11m can manage a 20kt gust from time to time i might have to change how i think about it.

i wonder what the usable range of the 11m might be?

Not sure about the Chrono, but for me that's the range I'd want to fly my 11m Sonic in if I could only have one kite. Since I can have more than one, I rig the 9m inflatable if it's building and the 11m if it's a dying breeze.

Your friend who is on a speed? That isn't a lotus perchance? The lotus will probably be quite a bit lighter than the V2. Lightwind you will notice it. If you want 5-12kts an 11m or 12m is more suited, you shouldn't be overpowered in 20kts . Jumps on an 11 will be fun/big in 20+knots.

yes he is on a lotus....

seems everyone i have mentioned this to is recommending the 11m. these foils must have a much better upper range than LEI of same size....

my edge 11m is a handful in 20+ on the foil.

I'm not sure they are recommending 11m in 20 kt with HF. That would not be much fun for an average HF kiter.

9m foil kite may not be a bad choice for you, especially if your local conditions are typically puffy, so you can use stronger gusts to get you going. If your friend is doing well with 10m Speed, you should do as well with Chrono 9m once you master it.

Pick the size that you will need the most. If there are more days of less than 10 kts, get 11m.

I use 11m FS Sonic for the low end, but I do like to down size to 9m at around 12-13 kts. If the wind is 9 to 11 when I start, I usually go straight to 9m (27m lines). It is just more fun for me. I used 9m race LEI, now I bought 9m Pansh A15 foil kite that I find more user friendly. It was a bargain and works well. Like you, I can't budget in 2 pricey foil kites

I don't necessarily think they have more upper range, maybe more comfortable in the high end. You are still going to use other kite/s so make your first foil the biggest. I have a friend the same weight as you he rides a twintip with a speed3-19 deluxe in the same wind range.

If your worried about safety and getting caught out in too much wind, the front line safety are quite effective on foils. I have used mine on a 10meter bridled foil in 35knots, a 10m ARC in 40knots. If your super worried, adding a fifth line will probably work on an 11m in 50knots. For a long time I exclusively self landed and launched even in 40knot winds. I'll hot launch my 6m in 40knots.

I want a foil with a sweet spot in the mid-upper teens with gusts to 20+ and lulls to 10-12.

Having more low end would be nice. I've got an 8m edge for 20-25
