Northern Carribean locations for kitesurfing

Postby GCKiter » Fri Jan 06, 2017 6:21 pm

Does anyone have any special places to go during the winter with chest high waves that you can ride a country mile and they don't close out, warm clear water with spectacular views,no need for drysuits and that occasional bikini you see walking on the beach.I'm in search of a foiling/surfing paradise.

Turks and Caicos has long bay, very nice kiteboarding, mild waves, nice views....

The water at Long Bay is only deep enough for foiling at high tide.

I suspect anyone kiting the spot you describe isn't likely to share it here for the world to see....

Yep, that's what I figured. I can't complain about my local beach just tired of winter and was thinking about a getaway trip.

I also recommend Providenciales Turks & Caicos as a great spot. I have been there twice for 2 weeks each time and it is the only place I have ever been where I kited 14 out of 14 days both trips. Long Bay is a great setup, you can foil there as well, 100% sand bottom. If you start off just west of the main kite beach it gets deeper and you can basically foil in all tides if you can start in 3 - 4 feet. It gets deeper the farther west you go and it is plenty deep once you get away from the beach. Let me know if you need any more info.

Can you recommend accommodations in Providenciales? Does one need to rent a car to get around the launching sites? Places to rent the gear? TIA

Kontech: Sorry, I haven't been on the forum for a while, I missed your Q. There is a wide range of accomodations on the Island, though most of them are on the Grace Bay side. There are a handful of kite specific villas on Longbay with compressors, kite storage etc, but pricey unless you are splitting it with a few other riders. You will need a car to get around or to get back if you do a downie to bugaloos or hansel & gretel, Long Bay is about 20min from the airport. You can rent gear from Kiteprovo, very cool people. Tell Mike I referred you.

I am a huge fan of the TCI. But just so the OP isn't misled, you won't find "chest high waves" on Provo. The only surf break is over the reef on the Grace Bay side of the island, and the prevailing winds are driven by the easterly trade breezes.....making the other side (Long Bay) the premier kiting location. The TCI are technically not even in the Caribbean (certainly not "Northern Caribbean").....they are just outside the Caribbean, located in the Atlantic Ocean.

But if you go, def call Mike or Chris at KiteProvo for gear. Mike can also hook you up with a variety of lesser known and relatively affordable accommodations.

Okay, now I'll go hydrate. I think I'm getting ornery. :-?
