Think the Hexo Plus was the nearest I've seen to almost a fully autonomous drone, the Lilly went under. Does not the DJI follow me mode still require you to have the controller out or can you put that away and it'll just follow your phone??

What actually do they follow in this mode? Your phone? Or a tag like Soloshot uses?

I believe it's your phones GPS. A GPS tag with elevation guidance (ie for snowboarding and mountain height / elevation / angle ) would be perfect.

Alex Caizergues has used the Hexo Plus, there are some videos out there. I think Airdog has similar functionality to follow phone's gps.

DJI requires phone to be connected to the remote controller in order to follow GPS position. DJI has a feature to track on screen without GPS but in my opninion it's not reliable enough to set it and leave it. It loose track easily from test I have seen. For kitesurfing might be easier to keep track given kiteboarder stand out on top of water.
