I havent seen this thread before it was linked to from the hydrofoil section now :D

or6 you are wrong, if you and your kite drift in the water in zero wind, but current, you will still have the same wind at the kite and be able to relanch, as if it was no current and the wind blowing at the same speed.
The wind gradient matters yes, but they would be somewhat the same "size" so no problem there either.

Sorry to say, but you somewhat got it wrong - you are talking about zero wind and running, but when you got current in no wind, it is exactly the same as having wind blowing and no current, that is 100 % for sure :naughty:

If you are riding in current and can not jump like you are used to, it is because you have chosen the wrong kite size - as if current is upwind you should choose a smaller size, and reverse, downwind current means you need a bigger kite.
WHY ?
Simply because it is only the wind versus the current speed difference that matters, nothing but that, regarding kite size and power.
Choosing your kite on this, will make your jumps exactly the same no matter which direction the current is.

Of course you will have more or less ease keeping ground relative to the shore, but that is not the topic here...

Think about it once more, or twice, it is very simple when one think in relative terms :thumb:

I know many can not grasp this, as it was the same issue most had with the "max jump" height, but no doubt it is how it works and not just theory.

Alex and edt and others are spot on or6.

exactly, only the difference between the wind speed and current speed matters and will define the kite size .
Then if you ride with your "usual" upwind angles, you will not get back to shore but far more downstream... so either you are able to "downwind" faster than the wind (in VMG so this requires already good skills in a hydrofoil), or you will have to call a friends to pick you up downstream to get you back to your start point ...
By the way riding downstream faster than the wind (in VMG of course) in hard to catch theoretically speaking...

This is supposedly in 3 to 4 knots of wind, and they are giving him some speed to start with, but the efficiency of the foil allows him to get foiling. A light wind foil, sail designed for pumping, and board designed for getting a foil going might mean that it would be possible to get a windfoil flying in 0 knots.

Could pumping a kite be possible? Is there a kite design that works well for pumping?
Following on from the pumping theme, this is a video of manpowered foiling. It can then maybe become manpowered using a sail or a kite to get the board moving fast enough and the foil being pumped enough to kitefoil in zero wind - but it may require a specialist kite for pumping.

Convince me, put it on video. You have had plenty of no wind days, i am sure 😉

There was (nearly) zero at water level....gradient wind...8-10 kn estimated on beach...on surfboards..bunch of us on 17m kites depowered all the way !! (surprised)16 kn wind in kites
Friend of mine riding a bit on the outside stalls his kite too low at edge of window during failed tight turn...he falls in... so does the kite
Can't relaunch at all...ocean had no whitecaps or capillaries...he drifted in after 25 min ...side side on wind direction ...very little 1/4 knot current ..2-3ft waves eventually took kite in

I hope some of UK riders would try it on Humber River near the Humber Bridge 2hrs after spring high water. The current is more than 4kts.

It could be the new competition centre fort St.Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco ;)

The difficult part would be how to start, as if only 4-5 knots of wind (eeeh, current) you can probably not relaunch a big foilkite from the water.

So as one said, put the kite on the ground dead downwind (inflated first by running), and jump in the water yourself - and hotlaunch the kite and you can loop yourself out to deeper water and foil back downwind.

If skilled :D

The current in the Pentland Firth between the North of Scotland the the Orkney Islands apparently gets up to around 14 knots at times, I'm sure that would do it. Wouldn't recommend trying to kite it though, it's a pretty dangerous stretch of water. You can see the whirlpools from the top of the cliffs. Might be wrong but I seem to remember hearing it's because several tides come together between the Atlantic and the North Sea.

Yes, seymour narrows can get to 15kts, but I don’t plan to kite in currents like these :goodluck:
