I have been foiling for a while on an entry level foil in ocean out back behind waves and in flat water with some non-breaking swell. I am in the market for a wave foil. Everyone seems to be saying slow foil for waves. I had been thinking about the 2017 Moses Fluente but seems too fast. That Takuma foil looks nice. But this brings me full circle thinking that maybe my current setup is ideal for waves.

Curious what people think about the performance of my current setup for RIDING WAVES (original Liquid Force Foil fish).... or if and how people think a Mose Fluente, Takuma v100 or a Gofoil would be better (and if so how?).

A really good question, much better than you know most likely :thumb:

.
I have been riding both a smaller fast wavewing, and a really big fast turning wave wing lately - often on the same day (even today with a 3.5 and 5 m2).

My view is:

The big wing is simply awesome in constant wind and lighter winds, particularly when smaller waves.

But the smaller wing excel hugely when the wind is higher (more than a 6 m2 kite), and sometimes also when it (waves) is bigger and you like more speed.

So IMO the big wings are great in small waves and less wind, and the smaller faster and even more lively are simply better and feels good in more wind :naughty:

The LF fish is great in light wind, but you will probably miss the speed and glide from a faster wing in more wind.

No, I see no reason to go for a Takuma or similar, as it is close to your current setup :D

Keep your foil fish, and get a faster (smaller) wing/foil too and see if you like both in their best conditions, like most of us do, or prefer one or another, is my advice

You need to try a Takuma or GOFoil Peter. The LF cannot compare to either. It has about half the surface area, is less stable and and a way higher turning circle and take off speed.

Hey Gunnar,

Will you test the bigger wings on the spitfire?

Still using that foil at all?

Yes I probably will do a review soon. I have been pretty busy doing reviews, so it has been hard to go back to the Spitfire, as I just do not have the time. Also I have been using predominantly Surf Foils (Go Foil and Takuma) for kitewavefoiling as they are what really works best for me.

Hi Gunnar, interested in what length mast you are using in the vid? Thanks

I have had two sessions with the Takuma Foil and SS SST 7m. Not thrilled so far. Too slow for my taste and very little room for error with small SS Dwarfcraft and 60cm mast.

Today 6m SST in around 16 knots or so with my Ketos Wave foil and 90cm mast. I had so much more fun. I will try the Takuma with longer masts but so far I think it won't get my favourite for wave kitefoiling. I like the more fluent feeling if a normal foil. Much about personal preference I guess.

You are right, I can not say anything about the Takuma, not having tried it.
So maybe this extremely big and slow wing gives a different new sensation it is not possible to foresee, before having tried it - correct.

But I can say, that the LF can ride really really slow, eventhough it does not turn as fast as our wave wings.

And when riding slow, you can turn faster too - so somehow it works fine with the LF wing in waves IMO (friend using it strapless).

Having both small and big wavewings now (lower aspect both, that turns on a dime), I can say that I love riding with my big wavewing as it can go slow and it is great in smaller waves/less wind.

But it lacks the speed a smaller faster wing got - so I prefer to use a smaller wing when more wind/waves - it simply feels better to have this free glide where you can not feel any drag and you dont need kitepower to accelerate, the lower drag wings do it themeselves when carving - feels awesome :thumb:

As ulx says, it is probably simply personal preference yes, but I have found that bigger wings are "boring" quite rapidly, eventhough perfect in some conditions and the best.

Do I see it right, on Gunnar's video, the kite is North Rebel? Surfing waves (and having fun) with not a "wave-dedicated" kite, impossible!

Thanks Gunnar.

For sure its going to be super subjective.

Video helps so much. Gunner's and Nicholas's are all really helpful for figuring out what the ride is like.

That big SUP wing looks super slow, but it also looks like it feels like surfing. Very different from how Nicolas rides the spitfire's in waves. Greg drexler is pretty different again.

Thanks for filming.

No the rebel is in the background. I am on an Ozone ReoV4 6m.
