Locosys GW-60. It works at 5Hz and has doppler.

Ok, Did a lot of research and reading here and other places.
I'll bake it down. The Locosys GW-60 is the benchmark of accuracy. The waterproofing spec is a bit low at ATM 5, but no one has complaints about water damage as far as I can tell.
If you are not too concerned about accuracy and online speed competition, the Suunto Ambit 3, which I have works great. The high end Garmin wrist watches work good too.
Each have software idiosyncrasies, but with a little patience they all work well.

One thing: I always forget to start my Suunto on the beach and end up starting the session on the watch while on the water.

I've just bought a used Locosys GT31 for £80 from FB Kitebay which doesn't do wireless like the GW-60 which is £200. The Garmin are £600+ unless you can get 'friends and family' deal from someone employed by Garmin. Love the versatility that Fenix 5 series offer, but not as accurate as Locosys as f2020 & Tom say. Heard from someone into speed kiting that Suunto Ambit doesn't cut it for him, like the Garmin, they update at 1Hz, so he's going down GW-60 in addition to GT-31 as backup unit.

GW-60 is not wireless.

GT-31 works great and usually 1 Hz is just fine.

But 31 is not as easy to just put on as a watch like the 60 as you have to wear it in an arm mount and preferably a bag for sealing too.

A number of us here in LaVentana have the Garmin Fenix 3HR. I paid about $500USD but with a new model out, I see they are down to $400USD.
Relatively easy to use. I like it a lot. As far as accuracy, don't know. How would I check it anyways? Good enough for me especially if the speed reads a bit high once in a while.

Ha haa indeed, very true about the accuracy.

In reality it does not matter at all, when you dont use it for speed records where a number will be deducted from your reading/file if not an accurate device :naughty:
