A little history might help. In the early years, most kiteboarders were windsurfers first and windsurfers never ever wore board shorts. No reason to. Rumor has it that it first started when wakeboot riders started using them due to dragging their asses on the ground and used them to protect their wet suits. So FUNCTION started it. But it trended since then just because most wear them so others wear them. I'll always wear them and have dragged my ass in shallow ricky waters and on land before, and most recently hit my ass super hard (throw off of a surf board and slid butt first) and swear my nice $400 wet suit would have ripped if not for the shorts. Nice huge bruise for weeks. To each their own of course, but we see yellow, green, purple, jean shorts which all make it more interesting than just black suits. Go board shorts. Shrinkage story sounds more plausible, I was told 6-7 years ago that was how the practice started. My nice new 5/3 Amp K wetsuit was $150. Some of the boardshorts I've seen guys wearing cost $80...it would cost more to go through two pairs of shorts. I wear the Dakine Nitrous boardshort harness most of the time. They don't protect you from the oyster beds though, wetsuit or no wetsuit!!!

it seems to me that guys that are really pre-occupied with this is the ones that do not wear one. Maybe it is the "are you wearing something?" in nudist camp syndrome?
I dunno. Who the hell cares about what other people wears...either way, what ever you choose, what other people wears have absolutely no impact on your life.

Board shorts it is for me. Nothing to do with trying to look cool and everything to do with people not trying to guess my religion Once wet my suit is very figure hugging. Once my wife and her friends had finished laughing I decided I would not be doing that again
