I doubt the LASIK has anything to do with it except for the fact that you do not need to wear glasses always and therefore more exposure to sun and wind. Pingueculum and pterygium are common eye conditions and aggravated by sun and wind. If you can avoid pterygium surgery in your life that would be a plus.

Vasoconstrictor eye drops for example those based on phenyephrine or tetrahydrazolazine (like Visene, Rhoto and ClearEyes) or Atropine (like Similasan Homeopathic Eyedrops) will cause more redness and irritation in the long run. (P.S. Atropine in Similasan is a drug, no matter how its labeled for you naturopathic folks.) I would stick with artificial tear products and sun/wind protection and if that is not working for you then get the eyes looked at.

Crizal Alize is very elegant for keeping lenses clean and clear, but I can't imagine taking a $400 pair of glasses to get sand blasted on the beach and lost in the surf. I have that on my glasses, which I only wear to correct minimal refractive error during night driving.

Personally, I like to wear dirt cheap sunglass/goggles in the water. The cheaper the better so I don't cry when I lose them. If you are resourceful you can probably find a gross for less than a pair of Oakleys. Rain-X (the kind that goes on the outside windshield) seems to work well for me. And I often use a lubricating ointment like RefreshPM before kiting so my eyes repel salt water. It helps a lot.

Thank you Doctor Jakemore
I take it that you are an Ophthalmologist
That is usually the mentality of doctors who make :cash: :cash: :cash: :cash: :cash: a year

Dirt cheap sunglasses even if you could afford losing one pair a week easily 8)

Besides you are living in the past with black and white TV with bunny ears antenna
Crizal alize is soooooo passe

Get back in touch with 2012 and an Optician who sells cutting edge technology
No reason to lo any sunglasses either or spends what!!!!! $400 bucks!!

"I build" custom made digital polarized with point of wear prism compensation sunglasses
With or without prescription single vision for ditance, bifocals, trifocal & progressives

Check out all the Crizal products that fight all the enemies of vision
(reflections,dust.smudges,scratches,oils,water even Uv and Fog)

Crizal Sapphire with scotchguard
Crizal Avance with scotchguard
(you can still get Crizal alize or also Crizal easy but why? they both have low wetting angle etc..)
Crizal Sunshield
Crizal Mirrors (silver,gold or blue)
Crizal Anti-fog !

Those who do not care about non -reflective there is a super 2 sided TD-2 hardcoat Anti-fog!!

I will go more in details some other time
Those lenses are made to order in 7-10 working days
We can install them in any 6base,8base or 9 base curve frames
Plastic wrap frames are better because they fit closer to the face due to rim thickness
They prevent the uv rays form reaching the eye through possible gaps
Frame selection important with poper "B" measurement (vertical height of frame)
By reaching lower to the cheeks water splashing up your leg and the sun reflecting off the water
will not enter your eyes from below the frame

I've read somewhere that Rain-X does not work with polycarbonate lenses and could damage mirrored coating. Probably I will try it first on my old ski googles before my seaspecs in case if it damages them.

Great remark
Rain-X is for "glass" windshields
It does not last and wears out fast on cheap sunglasses with cheap plastic lenses
It is not recommended on poly or mirror fifnihes

Crizal "in lenses" process with scotchguard (it is not a coating)
Barely wears out (3%) even after 20,000 cleanings !!
Garanteed not to scratch for 2 years with unlimited replacements if needed

Non RX plano sunglasses can be found with very good lenses out there
They have to be superhydrophobic and oleophobic (repel oil)
Just by put water on front and back of lenses
Then smear the water all over the surfaces
The water should "bead up" at a very high wetting angle (crizal has highest 116 degrees)
If it does not then you very likely will not like wearing sunglases out there

An other very important detail people need to know is that the backside of dark lenses need AR
AR is short for anti-reflective
Crizal does that auto matically and also many many high end type wrap sunglasses
A dark lenses without AR on the back is quite difficult to look through clearly

To create a darker lens without adding more tint we use mirror finishes on front of lenses
Depending on the mirror type & reflectivity your eyes will feel the tint to be 10 to 20% darker

To reduce spots order sunwear lenses with a super hydrophobic angle of 116 degrees
Crizal Avance or Sapphire,Crizal Sunshield or Crizal Sunshield Mirrors are great examples
Lenses like that are made to order pretty much worlwide

These Crizal lenses sound interesting. Do we have to get frames then get lenses made up for them? Sounds expensive and a pain to do. I would be extremely pissed off to spend mega bucks on a pair of sunglasses that don't work significantly better than the cheapies.

The problem with existing watersports sunglasses is that they are too hard to keep clean and fog/smear/scratch free. RainX and Anti-Fog and similar products don't really work on glasses.

Thanks for your question!
Yes you supply the frame and we make the lenses to fit them
Supply any wrap plastic sunglass frame sold out there (buy them w/o polar lenses to save $)
We will trace those "demo lenses" and build the very best kiting sunlenses

It is not mega bucks to do Wrap Polar Poly Grey or Brown color lenses with Crizal Sunshield
For maximum darkness we suggest Crizal Mirrors
Makes lenses feel darker to the eyes by 10 to 20%

Also you talk about fog
Well we have Crizal anti-fog w/ activator formula (unbeatable product-zero fog possible)

The 2012 Crizals explained above are not coatings applied to lenses
It is fused inside the matrix of the lenses and therefore does not peel or crack
It is also matched to lens type material to flex without getting stressed

2 years "unlimited scratch warranty"
Remain "always" SupaEZ to clean with the scotchguard inside the Crizal
No smear either.....water...oil.....anything you can think of will bead off the lenses and wipe easily

Those 2012 Crizal lenses are unique and i am sure your local Optician could build you a pair
Even the non-reflective "backside of lenses" absorbs damaging UV that bounces off the back
That way dangerous UV will not reach your eyes

All Crizal lenses are easy to do and take 7-10 working days where i live
I will soon put up prices to give you an idea how much those lenses cost :thumb:

Nice display, SupaEZ. Can't even show a little respect while you're busy pimping yourself. it's just too SupaEZ to put someone down.

Thank you Jake for your willingness to help a stranger out.

The UV rejection of cheapo sunglasses is the same as for the expensive ones. No coating, whatever you might call it, will protect the lenses from getting sandblasted. You will loose the cheap ones in the water as easy as the expensive ones. As jake said, buy the fashionable specs to check out the chicks after kiting and go for the cheaper ones for kiting.

Lets be clear that we are not talking as much about fashion as about best vision, although fashion is also a big element in optics and sales. Personally, I think we should also be thankful to 14toeside and the rest of the optical industry for pushing the field forward, and for the information that he shared which is very useful IMO.

But there a person's visual need depends on situation. For example, I might recommend something different for astronomy, playing baseball, driving during dusk, going to a party, or going to the beach.

I have found out for me, that recommending the most expensive option or the option that offers the most incremental profit for one sale is not necessarily the best option for my business, because I depend on relationships that are built on trust.

Because I have good relationships with opticians in town, I pay for glasses with goodwill and not money. Depending on how your point of view that might make glasses more expensive. But in any case I am not wanting to disrespect a precious gift by losing it in the surf within one or two weeks of receiving it.

And to be perfectly clear, I do love my glasses with "antiquated" Crizal Alize and drill mount lenses. They are the best glasses I have ever had.
