I'm not a doctor, but I would say that clsoing a 2cm diameter wound with superglue or nuskin is out of the question. Depending on the depth of the wound and condition of surrounding tissue I would say at least 1 week out of the water, and maintaining a clean dressing daily is essential, (sorry Toby). The use and effectiveness of topical antibiotic creams is debatable, although it will keep the tissue soft and pliable if that is a concern.

Get a landboard Toby and practice on land!... just don't hit your wound on the ground or yourl be in more pain.

PS sometimes its better to wait it out than carry on and make the injury worse.
In saying that i was landkiting one handed with a cast on so i don't take my own advice.

I kited Mui Ne 3 months last winter with several open wounds. One deepish slice from my fin on the foot and a nasty shin skinning from my board that took months to heal.
The trick is to sanatize it after every session immediately, again just before sleep, and since its on the foot and has previously been infected I would clean it several more times outside that routine.
I used Iodine or Betadine to keep clean. Just make sure you dont have any more kind of infection. The picture you posted looked septic needing antibiotics.
I found getting the wounds scab wet and then drying it out with Iodine kept all the infections away and I never stoped kiting.
Good luck with it.

I always carry hydrocolloidal plasters (Mannings brand blister plaster) when traveling, they stay on for weeks, are water tight and can be reinforced with some leukoplast sports tape for high friction/chafing areas.
They'd be too small for 2cm diameter though but good enough for anything that doesn't need stitches

thanks for all the info guys.

It is just above the foot joint.

It was bad already, had it cleaned with antibiotics and desinfection etc. It was swollen...today my last day of antibiotics...

Now the wound is closed with hard blood (whatever that is called). I used to put antibiotic creme and wound creme on it, but this way it kept staying wet...didn't look that would heal.
So since today it is dry...I can wait another week, then I really need to kite daily to get in shape...I have 1 week left then...

I have some bandaid, waterproof, and I am thinking of putting that on, then put bandage on top, then tight it up with tape... I will make a picture ;-)

Problem is, I am limited of what I can get here. Antibiotic powder sounds great...would stay dry...

and I have some liquid band aid as well...could even put that on as well...

thx for all the help!

1) for ouzing (not dry) the best way nowadays is really hydrocolloid bandages (often also used for blisters). you can leave them on for a few days but they should be on watertight. you can protect the bandage using first a layer of reversed duct-tape (so nothing sticks to the watertight bandaid) and then a few layers of nl duct-tape.

2) you could use also something like opsite to really watertightly seal the wound and again use Duct_tape for protection.

3) superglue etc works only on small cuts.

Toby! you should ask some kiters (you know there are some kitsurfing forums arround like kiteforum or Oasis) who are coming to eqypt to bring you some wounddressings!
I already could help quite a few stranded kiters with anykind of equipment they could not get locally...
Andreas
PS: the wound on the picture below looks like there has been more damage then just a skin laceration. the fastest way for it to heal is probably let it stay moist (socalled wet to dry wounddressings) and do frequent dressing changes and not let it be covered by a crust.....

Toby,

I recently cut my food when kiting. I took a large scoop out of my foot and was unable to glue it or get any real cover on it.

I initially used a large blister plaster which was comfortable but didn't really help the healing.

A friend of mine is a nurse and she got me something called 'Jelonet' http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jelonet-Dressing-10cm-10/dp/B002ZGT0SA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1339771972&sr=8-3

This product as mentioned earlier is for burns mainly and open wounds that don't have skin to aid healing.

day one - Image

day 3 - after using a blister plaster Image

day 4 - wrapped for kiting (with blister plaster on underneath) Image

day 1 of Jelonet - Image

The product is AMAZING, I have never healed so quick from a cut that was right down to the nerves, very painful.

I hope you can get some and remember, in warm water it take up to 10 times as long for a cut to heal. DONT let the wound dry out, keep it moist with the use of a product like Jelonet.

Good luck

Tony

Put a disinfecting pad over the wound and then cut a piece of tear aid A slightly larger then the pad (round over the corners) to water proof it... its a bitch to get off but it works. clean the area with alcohol pad first though for better sticking.

Don't screw around with infections... if you wait too long the last resort is amputation. Read up about antibiotic resistant bugs. I got a leg infected last year and the hospital staff gave me a lecture.
