The only advice that anyone should be offering you is GET SOME LESSONS ! If you'd had a lesson you would know that at your level you can not launch a 14m kite in 7 knots of wind.

Kitesurfing is a dangerous sport and we all have a responsibility to ensure the safety of not only ourselves but also others, especially beginners, otherwise you will just end up another fatal statistic which impacts the sport for the rest of us.

Apologies if i sound negative, i'm not trying to deter you, it's great that you want to learn to kitesurf but you will advance much quicker with some hands on lessons. All too often people die from this sport and you need to respect the power that a 14m kite can generate even in 12 knots of wind !

BC, You ain't gonna kill yourself in 7mph. And yes, although not the safest route, you can teach yourself. You start with a trainer and play with that for a season. Instructional videos are your best bet, so you can SEE what they're talking about, especially ones that emphasize safety.

All that said, teaching yourself can waste a whole season. Taking even one lesson by a pro will accellerate your learning time exponentially. Expect to pay $200 per lesson. Money well invested.

Mr.bazzamac is correct. It is all for safety reasons. You can't just go and buy a plane and try to learn how to fly it by yourself, you need hours of lessons and same thing applies to kiteboarding but not as many hours of course.
So please Mr.keegster17 you need to get some kiteboarding lessons from a kite school in order to keep you and any body else safe. This is also one of the reasons why few beaches are closing down for kiteboarders. So once again lets all be safe and enjoy this sport that we all love.
We are all here to help you out, but we want you and every body else around you to be safe.

If you just search back through this forum over the past year you will see stories about a number of kiteboarders killed. Make no mistake this is an extreme sport and you are not so much taking lessons to make your learning progression faster (although it will for sure do that), you are taking lessons so someone competent can teach you the basics you need to know to have a good chance of enjoying kiteboarding safely.

Winds can change very rapidly and with very little warning sometimes - I was out on a 17m when first learning and in 15 minutes the wind built so that I went from having to work to keep the kite flying it was so light, to being unable to hold the kite down and having to pull the safety release.

Lastly every time there is a serious accident our access to kiteboarding beaches is threatened, so this is another reason so many people are telling you to take lessons - we are not always so concerned for you, we are also selfishly concerned for ourselves !!
