We are flying to Rome in 2 weeks and really want to get some kiting in. We have some kind of reservation for a hotel in Fregene (for around 500 euros) and were planning to use the beach at Rambla Maccarese but I am worried that the wind will not be good enough to spend say 5 out of our 7 days there kiting.
I hoped someone could advise if we would be better off considering Tuscany. From what I've managed to find it appears that Maccarese doesn't benefit from thermal winds that somewhere like Talamone seems to get around 2pm everyday over the summer.
I'm not sure how easy it is to find cheap accommodation at Talamone with the campsite being so expensive at this time of year and any B&Bs not already booked being around £100 a night. Also not sure how we will travel as hiring a car for a week is too expensive for us this year. Anyway I can look into this in more detail. Whats more important is to have a good chance of kiting.on our holiday so would be really grateful for any advice.
Cheers Huw

I live in rome and spend summer in sardinia. never had 5 days out of 7 in rome since 10 years ,sometime winter time 2or 3 days in one week, the most. if you want mostly kiting cancel rome. nearest place for thermal can find in ladispoli ,about 40 minutes driving, can get 18 knots choppy west wind when in rome is 8 10 knots. with scirocco (south wind) rare in this months can get more knots in civitavecchia ,la centrale, but the place is hard to find,1 hour driving. I consider 15 knots at least. if you have big sizes kite and big boards could be better. talamone thermal also around 18 23 knots from west wind flat water, you can make daily trip from fregene, wind starts afternoon. in any case you will find traffic, crowd, sun ciao

Thank you Piccio thats really helpful. We are now hiring a car but are still staying in Fregene and leave in less than a week. Ladispoli/Campo di Mare would be my first choice for thermal winds but some places say kiting is banned there during the summer?
I see that in a previous post you said that it only works with north wind - did you mean south?
Are there other locations that work with thermal winds in other directions? It would be really good to have options for most/all days. The next nearest spot I have found for thermal winds that isn't dangerous or industrial/built up seems to be Marina di Pescia? This is at least a little closer to us than Talamone and I don't want to spend too much of our holiday driving.
The directions I for Campo di Mare say to head to Cerenova Cerveteri then drive north along the coast road until it ends and its on the other side of the stream. Is this all we need?
Cheers Huw
