But you are correct, major disadvantage of 5 lines is that the kite can roll and the 5th line can get wrapped around the canopy which is very hard to rectify - and always requires a trip to the beach to re-rig. For this reason 5 lines are not recommended for waves.

Next time you wrap your fifth line just let go of the bar to take the power out of the kite, then pull the 5th line, keep pulling. I've never not been able to undo the line wrap using this method, the lines will be crossed but the kite will be flyable.

I wondered about that... just never had the courage to try it. I've always got the kite down but always by fluke.

I'm wondering how you do that... I'm guessing you fly the kite to zenith then climb up the 5th line hand over hand until you reach the kite? ... the kite hovering all the while kite flying wing tips up?

I've often thought of re-launching the kite from the 5th by flying it off the 5th until it's high in the air then letting go of the 5th line and grabing the bar and flying a wing tip. I've never tried that ... just curious. If it could be done reliably it would save the canopy lots of wear when launching from the 5th line.

Exactly what I do, fly it at 12, pull release and pull in 5th line - walk towards kite while pulling in 5th line and you can get to kite before it hits the deck. I take my kites whenever I go away so is useful when kiting on hotel beaches with lots of people - obviously I also choose the least crowded spot!! Only prob with launching like you say is that a kite on a 5th line will usually fly upside down so will just fly into the sand when the lines get tension.

I'm looking forward to trying that. It'd be good when I'm landing on rocky or small beaches.
What about if you fly it real high and then fly one of the wing tips? Probably pick an old ckite and empty beach to try it out sometime.
