Can your first surfboard be too big? Thinking about a cabrihna 6'1", I'm 5'11" 175lbs.

would be fine, i like smaller surfboards for kiting tho generally, I ride a 6'2 but most are on 5'8 - 5 '11

smaller move around a bit better, you don't need to be able to paddle them... too small nad/or bigger rocker and they start to bog down a bit, wind effected kiting waves tend to be less steep to you want to get through sections with out bogging down

if you getting into it don't worry too much, it gets tough when you really get into and end up wanting a whole quiver for different sized swells..

I am 1m83 and 80 kg, and 6.1 is a bit too long for me. I am now looking after a 5.10 or 5.11. Beware it is not only about the length, but also about the width, and also about the volume. I bought a 6.1 north Kontact because I wanted a little more buoyancy than on my 5.8 takoon burning. My home spot is quite choppy and the kontact works pretty well there, but still after 10/15 sessions it feels a little too long, and when the wind gets strong (30+) I actually have a much better control on my 5.8.
Well, the choice is not only about the board, it is also about your home spot and your riding style.

as for going for second hand, that's what I do, I can buy without trying, and resell shortly after for about the same price if it doesn't fit. I don't believe newer boards are any better.
