Propane's a little heavier than air, if there is a leak in the gas line, the propane will tend to collect at floor level. If the room isn't well ventilated, when the propane reaches both the lower flammability limit concentration ( 2.1% for propane ) and source of ignition ( pilot light on the stove or oven, spark from an electric motor on the fridge's compressor ) then BOOM.

Having the tank close to a bbq usually isn't a safety hazard as they are typically used outdoors, where ventilation is excellent and the risk of building up a concentration of gas is low.

Usually the gas cylinder is located outside to minimize this risk, but there still has to be a run of gas line tubing or pipe into the house, so there is still some risk of a leak inside the house. That's why the mercaptan or rotten-egg smell that is added to the gas, which our noses can detect at very low concentrations, much lower than a combustable level.

The propane stuff isn't a huge issue. You have to maintain the tank, housing and hose. You should just know how to recognize a leak...if you have a leak simply move the tank outside, and then just use one of those big floor brushes to push the gas outside. Propane has an additive (ethyl mercaptan) to make it smell like rotten cabbage so it is easy to recognize..unless your house generally small like rotten cabbage.

Also if you are one of the hard core super cool dudes, just light a match and the gas will be gone in no time. Bonus: Most bugs you never bothered to clean out will die.

Note: I am not a propane professional...however my cabin has gas stove, fridge, ovens and lamps.

There is a valve to turn the gas on and off. I only leave it on when we cook.
Taxes are super low on the house like $20.00 US dollars per year. It is very easy for foreigners to buy property in Brasil and have the title in their name. You just need to get a CPF number that you can get in 1 day in Fortaleza. I am selling the house because I am building 2 more just the same on a near street. The área is growing alot and for me Paracuru has it all, waves and flat wáter and a very reasonable cost of living for those looking for the simple life but do not wanna spend a fortune like in Hawaii or somewhere like that.
