15.1 wipika amp ideas

Postby Zalex820 » Wed Nov 06, 2013 2:21 am

Hello everyone, I had just went through some of my old stuff that has been stored for a while and came across an old 15.1 meter wipika Amp. I am not planning on using this beast as a light wind kite of anything like that. I was wondering if anyone has any other cool ways to use this kite. Share your ideas.

I worked at Wipi in those days and there was no 15.1 m amp in the lineup, that I can remember. Where did you get that number? The 11.8 was actually close to a 16m kite as we used a "projected" size number, (think shadow size). The next size up was 13. something and was a little over 18m flat. If you do indeed have a 15.1 thats a 20m kite! And with the graduated AR, the bigger the kite the higher the AR, thats one big ass ribbon to fly! I would guess you could use it as an awning on a 50 foot motor home!

15.1 is the PROJECTED size. the size of the shadow the kite would cast when inflated. To get the Square Meter size,(that EVERYONE else has always used) add about 1/3 of the wipi size back in. tHAT BE A 20 METER KITE, BRADDAH! :jump: :naughty: :cool2:

He is right, the AMP sizes were:

7.5 / 5.5 projected.
9.6 / 7.1 projected.
11.8 / 8.7 projected.
14.0 / 10.3 projected.
16.2 / 11.9 projected.
18.4 / 13.5 projected.
20.5 / 15.1 projected.

So just like Cabrinha and others did in the start, the "size" has to be multiplied with 1.36 to get the flat size area in m2.

I remember the AMP 16.2 (flat) being a powerful light wind kite, when friends had one, but have never ridden it myself.

Is this monster on 4 lines or 2 lines?
I still have a wipi 6,5m and only 2 lines l think the bar is 70cm too...man oh man, we got it out this summer , with just a light breeze....man did it pullllllll, l wonder how l was Ble to fly this thing, no depower, a windsurfer trapeze line...chickenloop and the only QR was a line goung to one sterring line, that jumped when pulled....and made it flag out on one line....
The weapon op destruction hahaha
But still funy, as a lot of nowadays kiters, wondered if this was some kind of prototype we were testing or so... :jump:

I have been thinking in making a beach- windscreen out of it....but rather keep it as is...it has already become kite history

Dude :cool2:

It is a 4/5 line, and their last good C kite, before the company changed owner/profile and faded away.

Light wind kite it not the word for this wipi. You can fart and get lofted. I won't fly this kite due to Lack of safety. So I have this thing sitting around and I'm not sure what to do with it.

There is no safety issues, as this very kite has a depower 5th line so you can kill the kite fully :naughty:

Anyways, in the windrange you might use such a kite (sub 10 knots if average weight), depower does not matter IMO.

But IF you get surprised, just let the kite depower a bit, or fully, to the 5th flag out line :thumb:

Althoug - many who has not been through the stages from the start, go wrong and think a huge kite can fly in absolutely no wind almost

WRONG !

The smaller the kite, the less wind it will be able to fly, and it will be much easier to keep it in the air.

So the huge kites can be a hassle to get "up and around", compared to smaller kites.

When up, and out on a board - THEN the big ones has more pull (pull increases with projected size approximately).

So you wont get yanked if you try to ride with this kite, but it can be more difficult if not used to these sizes, just in general, and keeping it in the air (much easier with a smaller kite)

You have to remember it is a C shaped kite too, so not the same power as an SLE kite, straight out, but it might be able to generate good power when you fly the kite up and down, as a C kite is better in turns, and the AMP has a good cambered profile and high AR, so excellent regarding apparent wind.

If curious - just go ride it and let us hear your experiences :D

Nothing to be scared about  (besides a bit of pumping ha haa)
