Sri Lanka next week..

Postby ichabod » Tue Jan 21, 2014 4:38 pm

Hi all, I'm arriving in Sri Lanka on saturday 25th. I was supposed to be surfing but the mate I was meeting out there got dumped by a wave and broke his pelvis. As I'll be on holiday alone now I thought I might take my kites and have a few questions..

Does anyone know about the wind conditions? Windguru says Kaliptiya has a fairly constant 14 - 15 knots. Is this correct? Do they ever get stronger days? Not sure if I should bother with my 9m or just 12m. The wind is NE which means it is coming over the land. Are there problems with the wind shadow caused by this? Where on the lagoon is the best place to stay and kite?

Thanks for your help!
Dan

I am in the last couple days of a month long tour of the island and have kited in a couple places around the island. I was in kaliptiya for 4 days. The general trend seems that it doesn't pick up till around 1ish. If that's the only place you are planning to be I would suggest just taking your 12. I also kited at negombo(was weak), hambontota(was really strong, tricky launching), and hopefully today on the south coast. I ride foils, and had my 12 fall apart on my first day so I've been using my 21 and a 8. Let me know if you need suggestions for places to stay and kite spots. Wish I went further north to Mannar and Jaftna but rain kept us away.

Hi guys,

the wind here in Kalpitiya is blowing since mi-january on an average of 6 days a week, from 15 to 20+ knots. Depending on the day it can start in the morning and drop mid-afternoon or start around 1-2pm till 6.

And Gisela Pulido is here with us training for PKRA since 2 weeks...

here is a video filmed these days on various spots around Kalpitiya.

I'd definitely take the 9 as well.
Last year in Feb, we had about 5 days per week on average kiteable wind, mostly thermically re-inforced, and building around 1pm, lasting until sunset. Typically, when there was wind, it was good for the 9 (20knts or so).
We kited south of Kalpitiya, on the ocean of Thoduwawa/ Madurakuliya.

Kappalady kite camp is situated on the west coast of Sri Lanka, 2 hours drive from the airport.

We have 2 windy seasons:
• Our summer season from May until October offers non-stop wind between 15-30 knots.
• In the winter, from the middle of December until middle of March we get afternoon wind between 15-25 knots.

The camp is composed of 10 nice bungalows all with en suite bathrooms, located 200 meters from the pristine Indian Ocean and 300 meters from the Kappalady lagoon.

You will find a lot of spots within easy reach, from flat water to waves:
• Kappalady lagoon, also known as the freestyle lagoon, is next to the camp and offers perfect flat and shallow water with steady wind.
• From the lagoon, you can cross the 50m wide sand bank and ride the peeling waves of the Indian Ocean on our reef 200m offshore, or do an awesome downwinder.
• We are specialists in kite trips, and will tailor the experience to your needs. We can bring you to world class spots, organize epic downwinders, camp on desert islands with perfect flat water, and more. Every day you can discover a different spot.

We provide beginner lessons but our speciality is advanced courses.
Zac, our coach, will bring you to the next level.
We believe that everyone can improve something about the way they kite, and we want to help you do just that.
Whether you’re working on your upwind riding position, trying your first jumps, learning to gybe a surf board or even trying to crack that elusive backmobe, our advanced clinics could be the perfect solution for you.

Our awesome Chef Will enjoys French, Thai, Sri Lankan food and many more, and will cook you an array of delicious dishes served on a buffet. There is nothing better than a good dinner and a nice cocktail in our bar after a full day kiting.

From October until April, when the wind kicks in a bit later there are often mornings free, so we offer a range of different activities, such as Dolphin and whale watching, diving and snorkelling to help maximize your holiday experience.

Transport to and from the airport or anywhere in the country can be organized.
We can help you to organize tours in the island.
