The Rock International Open Ready for Action

Cayman set to host its first annual kitesurfing competition attracting top athletes from around the world.

Residents of Grand Cayman will welcome the first international kiteboarding event to the island next week playing host to the top men, women and juniors in freestlye, race and big air disciplines. This is the first time that the Cayman Islands will host such an event and the athletes and organisers alike are looking forward to the exciting action, world-class conditions, exclusive events and the best in Cayman hospitality.

Organisers came together nearly 12 months ago and decided to stage the first TRIO competition in Grand Cayman in order to showcase the island to other enthusiasts around the globe. “Cayman has some of the best spots in the world for kitesurfing.” Commented Derek Serpell, Director of TRIO. “We have crystal clear, flat, turquoise, water coupled with sunshine, empty beaches and consistent winds – we need to tell people about that!” he continued. Over the last year the TRIO committee, made up of volunteers from within the Cayman kitesurfing community, have worked tirelessly to promote the event internationally, and it’s been working. Nearly 50 athletes are registered to compete, among them the current men’s freestyle champion, Alex Pastor, the 2012 women’s freestyle world champion, Karolina Winkowska, and four times womens race world champion, Steph Bridge. Local talents Amy Strzalko, Tynan Klein and Maya Ogorzalek will also be competing.

Another goal of TRIO is to encourage young people in the Cayman Islands to try the sport and highlight the importance of staying active. In addition, organisers hope that they can raise awareness for conserving Cayman’s beaches and the environment but showcasing it’s potential to increase tourism. For these reasons TRIO has partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters and The Department of Environment Turtle Conservation Program, and all proceeds from the event will be donated to these charities. “We’re thrilled to be working with TRIO and we have a lot of very excited Big Brothers and Sisters and their Little Brothers and Sisters who will be coming out to watch the competition. Everyone’s looking forward to meeting the pros” said Julissa Castillo, Case Manager at Big Brothers Big Sisters. “Education and youth are very important to TRIO and a number of the pro riders attending will be going into schools to speak at assemblies ahead of the competition and we will be welcoming school groups at the beach.” Added Serpell.

The action is set to kick off with an exclusive movie premier of “With a Kite”, the first ever full feature kitesurfing movie. Limited tickets to the premier, sponsored by Stepping Stones, are available for sale at Abacus for $25 and include a pre and post party at Abacus with a chance to meet the product and the TRIO athletes. All proceeds will be donated to the TRIO charities.

Competition will get underway, starting with the racing in the morning on Thursday 13th February at the Holiday Inn, followed by the freestyle competition to be held at Barkers and will continue on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th. A complete schedule and timings will be posted on the event website – www.trio.ky.

The event will close with a glitzy Gala dinner and the official awards ceremony on the Crescent at Camana Bay. The athletes, sponsors, and VIP guests will enjoy drinks followed by a 3-course dinner and after dinner entertainment. Limited tickets are available from Abacus for $100. All proceeds will be donated to the TRIO charities.

Spectators are welcome at all beach events and both competition venues (Holiday Inn & Barkers) will be set up with food and drink concessions and spectator areas. Spectator entry is free.

BARKERS, Grand Cayman Feb 1 2014 – Dozens of volunteers took advantage of cool winter morning to protect one of their favorite outdoor spots on Grand Cayman. They successfully collected and removed more than 30 bags of ocean-‐bound trash over 2 miles of beach as part of The Rock International Open (TRIO) beach cleanup day.

Working together to protect what they love, and get ready for Cayman’s first international kitesurfing event which will welcome over 40 of the sports most famous athletes from around the world in Grand Cayman next week, more than 50 participants scoured the beach and inland pathways for plastics, bottles, shoes, bags and other rubbish.

Barkers beach is a popular turtle-‐nesting site and TRIO will be supporting the Department of Environment’s turtle protection program with proceeds from the event. “Barkers is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Cayman Islands. As kitesurfers, we take advantage of the consistent trade winds which allow us to practice our sport in this wonderful environment, but we must never forget that we are sharing the location with the turtles, and do our best to protect them.” Said Derek Serpell, TRIO event director.

As they prepare for 4-‐days of sporting action, TRIO’s organisers are keen to reassure Cayman’s

public that they are not harming the national park at Barkers and will ensure that the area is left as it was before the competition. “Volunteers worked hard over the weekend to remove seaweed and burs from the beach to allow spectators to walk amongst the trees and sit in the shade whilst enjoying the competition” commented Damian Davis, site manager for TRIO. "It was great to see kitesurfers, beach users, and environmental lovers getting together and giving something back to the local community by cleaning up Barkers beach” he continued.
