Good interview, thanks!

Is there a list of gear anywhere?

From the kites I remember it was:
North Evo and Vegas, Cabrinha Switchblade, Flexifoil Force and Hadlow Pro, Core GTS, Slingshot Fuel, Naish Draft and Torch, Airush Razor, Best Extract, Liquid Force Hifi-x and some RRD kite.

Not certain it was Andries Fourie who helped Tom.. i think it was Langeree. Either way, Tom hit that water real hard. I was standing some good distance away, and it was easily heard even in that wind.

Tom Hebert for sure was the crowd favourite, not from reputation, but from performance and flair on the day. He was drawing cheers and hoots from the beach like no other competitor. Barefooting in the shallows, big smiles, big height and hangtime...huge committed moves. Truly ace to watch. I was so bummed when he hurt himself and was out.

Kudos to the man. He for certain is the uncrowned King of the Air... respect.

Except. All other aspects being equal. Some kites will take you higher than others.

So the kite does have effect on height !

This was quite obvious with this event.

Not really in my opinion. Which kites did stand out so much for you?

Tom has jumped the highest, because he took a 9m2 delta kite (at the beginning even an 11m2), which by its shape has more power then a 9m2 C kite which others were riding. It was the same with Andries with a bow kite and similar with Kevin who rode a 10m2.

So because of the type of kite Tom was flying he was able to hold more power and jump higher? compared to some of the others who had C kites with less depower and jumped lower? is this what you are saying?

Doesn't that validate my statement? some kites jump higher than others.

That's not what I'm saying really. What I am saying is that others would probably need a 10m2 C kite to compare with Tom's 9m2. He had the strength to hold down more power then others, maybe it was a bit easier due to huge depower, but still Kevin managed to use a 10m2 Torch and go big as well.

And I am not saying that there aren't kites which jump bigger then others, but at this type of competition it really seemed to be more of who has more strength and technique to do it, then a type of a kite used.

maybe if he was on a c kite the direct feel would have let him know where the kite was during his super cool rotations and then he wouldn't have crashed so hard.

Billie, now you know why I use an 18 and don't go smaller in strong winds.
Yes, the boys jump much higher, but do less tricks up there. The risk is huge, and I don't take that risk. If I tried, I would have already been injured big time, maybe wouldn't be able to kite anymore. I am 42 and the brain is on...us guys don't do that ;-)

In my winds with 18 sqm I can do way more tricks, since it leaves room for errors. If I crash I am less likely to get injured. This is why I can push so much further with tricks than anyone with a smaller kite.

The secret to all my tricks is my gear setup.

Kudos to the kids going for that risk and putting up a show!
But they all know it could be there last ride...I had kites stalling in me in kiteloops...so trust me, I am more than happy if all riders survive it...it could be really bad.

Fingers crossed for the future events!

I agree, Toby! I'm 41 and I'd rather go overpowered on a bigger kite. Once I'm going big, I'm not really fooling around up there. Just enjoying the hang time w/ simple grab or something. Been taught that lesson enough long ago.

I'm 42 and love to boost on my small kites..... well down to 8m. Not that keen on my 6 it doesn't have the float. But being a trickster isn't my main goal, blasting through the air is. Also these crazy guys are boosting way higher then me. If I'm 10m up that is crazy high for me!
