It isn't necessary to have anything shiny John. Your hand makes a nice trolling teaser dragging through the water. Or, just wipeout near the sharks, they may strike very suddenly before deciding we taste bad. Going into the water off plane for an extended period around sharks has also led to problems in the past.

Hi Rick,

I agree with you and know it's not necessary, but I'm always curious about these details nonetheless. I know a few of your Florida amigos are well aware of it first hand. I am curious about any modifiable factors involved in attacks aside from the obvious "don't go in the water" option.

Have fun and be careful doing the "Jesus walk" out your way.

John

Hi John,

I wrote the following article on how to try to avoid negative shark interactions while kiting over a dozen years ago with some updates since. I just read over it, it still seems to contain reasonable advice to try to reduce the odds of a bad encounter.

There is information about the blacktip aka spinner shark migration at: http://www.fksa.org/showthread.php?t=10379

It definitely is not necessary; however, I always feel a little better leaving mine at home and not wearing anything that can shine or sparkle. Look at a bait ball in murky water and all you will see is sparkles and I believe the bigger fish strike at the sparkle.

I think at this point I would kite in a lagoon full of Great Whites if we just would get a little more wind in our "windiest month" of the season here!
