Florida & Caribbean

Postby heinzbush » Tue Mar 25, 2014 11:20 pm

Hi Guys,

I just booked a flight to Miami - 2 weeks end of April.

We (couple) would like to do some insane amazing beautiful kiting :)

Has anyone good recommendations around Florida and the Keys? What are the best / most beautiful spots? Where to stay?

Also: I was thinking whether we should build in a 4-7 nights trip to the Caribbean... but it should be "easy accessible" (e.g. direct flight from Miami). I thought about Turks & Caicos, but I am worried about the wind at the end of April! It would suck to spend soo much additional money and then have no wind... If I'm not mistaken, the wind in the Caribbean moved further south at this time of the year, e.g. Grenadines... but there are no direct flights...
A kitecruise would also be cool... but again, difficult to organise in such a timeframe and without a huge hassle of several flights...

Any thoughts, hints, recommendations are more than welcome!

Thanks a million!!

For Spots look on www.splocs.com

In think Aruba would be your best bet for wind!

But I would decide spontaneously and look at forecasts then book a flight.

Also check Cartagena, Colombia, since it might have good winds and it a beautiful city, you lady would like it. Direct flights from Miami available.

Thanks Toby!

...unfortunately I can't do it spontaneously... too much bookings (flights, rental car, accomodation) involved and not so flexible with the misses..

therefore, I would like to plan ahead...

Thanks for the tips - I will look into Aruba and Cartagena... not as nice as T&Cs though :(

With regards to spots in Florida / Keys and, in general, splocs:
the issue is that there are tons of spots in splocs, but I can't see it from a qualitative perspective... In Florida's case, the entire coastline is tagged, but where are the "must sees", "hidden gems" and "most popular ones with best winds"... which "center" is great for some "kitesurfaris".... stuff like that...

I would try to get some down winders in Jupiter and then spend some time in the Keys as well.

If you call the staff at places like Jupiter Kiteboarding, Otherside Boardsports, TKS Miami, Waterports West, you will likely be directed to the right areas.

Enjoy your trip (bring a big kite).

There is plenty of beautiful kiting scenery all over the keys. This pic is from the house I rented in Marathon. I had intentions of going to some other locations, but ended up launching right from the house every day and had all the shallow water I could ever want all to myself. The scenery was even better looking back at the shore.

There are not a lot of beaches in the keys, so if you can drift launch, you have many more options. If not, at Marathon, Curry Hammock has a great launch spot. Not sure about the winds during April, but definitely call oTherside and they will have all the answers.

All the best for your vacation.

I'm considering visiting Colombia in July, is that good time for wind around Cartagena ?

thank you

If you want to go anywhere in the Carribean then I Highly recommend BONAIRE. We spent 6 months there and it's constant wind, great kiting and good people. You can get a direct flight from Miami or Atlanta. Dont bother with Aruba, Bonaire is the place to go. Check out kitingbonaire website.
