Has anyone mounted kite gear on a roof ?

Postby fastrider » Sat Apr 12, 2014 2:43 am

Ok so the deal is i drive an suv and i know most of you say o thats big well i also have a wife and a 4 year old (with beach toys) well we know were dads stuff goes.
In that small corner of the car.

So i have been trying to find a way to roof mount my board thats in a bag and strap it.
Has anyone tried it and does it effect the rocker. Or would it be best to buy a box which is like $400.

Not sure what kind of boards you have, but I have had no problem strapping my boards to the roof rack. I pad my surfboard and put a twin tip on top of it (both in board bags) which takes up less than half of the roof, and then put the kites, harnesses and other gear in a soft roof bag on the other half. No problems Tennessee to Florida several times. Best of luck.

If you only have one kid and not enough space in an SUV you travel WAY too heavy.

Roof rack + tie down straps is all you need for boards. Ski/ snowboard carry is cool for TT but not really needed. Box or basket if you want to keep kite bags up there.

If you can't figure out how to put a board on your roof,
how the hell did you learn to kite?!?

 sorry, couldn't resist. surfers, snowboarders, skiers...everybody does it. plenty of solutions. boxes are good also. got it in a bag, just strap that shit down. you can strap things pretty tight before you have to worry about the rocker. heck, i've seen people take golf travel bags and drive down the highway with those tied on the roof!

Kiteboards, no worry.
Surf boards do fine on a roof, and they are much more fragile.
Some last 50 years, transported on the roof, no bag.
They do turn brown though...

I have a kite/golf bag and have strapped it on the roof racks a few times when traveling with groups. it frees up a lot of luggage space since it fits a TT + 3 kites + pump + harness + wetsuit. much cheaper than a box.

YES!!! Flysurfer mounted their kites on a car roof to prove their "superiority": viewtopic.php?t=2340893
