Talked to dan at north and he said he rode 5.5 premium construction and 5.2 TT back to back. He said it was minor but but "maybe" the 5.5 felt smoother. Conditions were light.

I can say for certain the new bamboo version is entirely different to the 2013. Smoother, quicker, feels more efficient, nimbler by far.

Doesn't track as well though. Hence the more upright rear fin me thinks.

If you want a board to "track" or go in a straighter line you want fins with more rake. A more upright fin makes a board more pivoty.

And if you are comparing a 2013 nugget to a 2014 nugget is comparing completely different outlines and boards. 2013 nugget = Firewire Sweet Potato 2014 Nugget = Firewire Baked Potato

14toeside - which one '13 or '14 planes earlier and goes better upwind in marginal winds?

They are pretty close. Even though the tail is pulled in on the 14 the extra length rail makes up for it.

... just to add, in my opinon , both boards have similar bottom end and its hard to tell them apart in that department unless you can be aggressive with the kite,,,, then the newer one has a little trick up its sleeve.

To explain, I find the newer '14 version is better at holding an edge and as others have already said here, tracks better, especially when powered. If you use your kite aggressively in the lighter winds you get power spikes as the kite dives or climbs and if you can edge against it during the power spikes, translates to forward board speed. Keep sining the kite using all the apparent wind to further assist you. If you don't use the boards edge abilities as effectively then you rely upon surface area, fin drive, kite size etc etc. and your forced to either head downwind a bit or run out of oomph.

I lent my 5'5" to a few friends who don't ride surfboards often and love TT only say the '14 Nugget is better, asked them why and they all say you can edge them better than the old one.

cheers,

Robbie :D
