I am asking because I have never been there either, but planning to do so in a few weeks. And I'm also a beginner.

Kite Point is very beginner friendly and there are usually quite a few people to help you out. The launch is fairly good size. There are also good downwind outs. Usually you can find some parking and its a short walk to the Point. The turnouts North of Avon are also a possibility however the launches are not as spacious and you can not drive down the roads (albeit a small distance) without a 4WD and permit. The best directions for the Sound are SW-NNW however KP will work on a NE though it will be a bit off shore.
