My new ride

Postby tahoedirk » Wed Oct 29, 2014 1:06 am

Finished my new board today. Looking forward to 6 or 7 weeks of living on the beach in Baja now, leaving in 11 days. Hoping for big waves and big fish.

Turned out 158x56x6.7 cm. 13+ cm nose rocker,6mm tail rocker(directional for sure)

Ironic, a board that's not supposed to touch the water!!

You want to hydrofoil in big waves ?

Seems you aim very high, as you are quite new Dirk, or am I wrong here ?

Maybe you just meant you wanted to ride big waves on a big fish (thus light wind), and not the hydrofoil ?

Awesome and beatiful work with both the foil and the board, love it :thumb:

PS: Hydrofoiling in big waves is awesome (I've only done it in medium waves yet, a couple of meters max), but really really dangerous if not experienced, as you will fall a lot, get disorientated, and the foil will roll over you and your body and lines, in breaking waves :o

Ha, funny.
I want to catch and eat big fish and surf extra large glassy waves with no kite . I would also like to learn to turn my hydrofoil up and downwind, switch my feet easily and look cool and loose, but mostly do all this without hurting myself or others or getting stabbed or lacerated by my new gizmos.

Yes someday I hope to surf on foil, but that is many many hours away.

thanks for the compliments and following my progress Peter.

So what sort of job allows you to live in Tahoe and Baja?

A job that understands! :thumb:

Nice job man. Looks like the foil you built is built for speed. Send some videos of the way it rides.

That is a very nice DIY hydrofoil build.

You need to put a lot of weight forward when riding down the wave with good amount of angle. Having enough angle should clear you from the foils path when you fall. Running the foil through whitewater feels bizarre.

thanks you guys.

I will show some video of me crashing on my head over and over again soon. Got some gybes early on but its been a while now , this new foil is less forgiving than my first. Speed scares me, I am only just now getting used to footstraps, I can't imagine 30+ knots yet. Without all the splashing though it's hard to really know how fast I'm going. Upwind is another story. In Tahoe, I kited 4+ miles straight upwind in crappy wind the other day without even trying , amazing!
My Job and 4 kids are very understanding. I am a builder, houses , furniture , kitchens, cabinets , hydrofoils, etc, whatever pays. Hydrofoils don't pay much though and carbon fiber and epoxy are not that fun to work with compared to tile and hardwood. More like concrete, it's fun when you're finished.

Looking forward to switching out my three different foils and stabilizers while learning! in warm water! without my hooded 5/4!

Sounds like you're living the dream. Do you give seminars on how office-bound fellows like me can break free? Moreso on how you get the wife to buy off on it.

It's ex wife, definitely no seminars

My lovely girlfriend is in for sure, and she has a new hydrofoil also! Dirt camping suits us all fine
