5M is not just for light weights. I used to question the 5M size. I remember when 8M or 9M was the smallest size sold for a quiver. I'm 90 kg and can start using my 5M when it is 25 mph on up. I've gone as small as 4M, but for my weight the 5M feels better and has a more comfortable top end than a 6M. My favorite conditions are when it is windy enough for my 5M, (which 10 years ago would have been survival conditions on a 9M). For big kites I like using line extensions, but for the 5M I prefer the kite without them, as it smoothes out the gusts.

Get the 5. Smaller kites are super fun with surf boards. They are agile, responsive, fast and safer in strong wind. 5m is my most often (around 50%) used size as I kite with surf boards in Taiwan. 4m and 7m are my small and large kites respectively.

Wondering the same: 80kgs, quiver 12m/8m... never really needed smaller, even when I got gusty 35kn wind.
The thing is, going to a reputedly windy place with winds easily above 30kn, and I like to surf, and not be overpowered if I try new things on TT, so considering 5.5m. But really, not sure if it's worth it, I'll end up using it maybe 5 times a year..
Now, if my wife who is half my weight would take up the sport, then I could have a legitimate excuse to get it, but she's on the fence...

I live in northern Taiwan and Jan lives in Penghu. We use 4m and/or 5m kites with surf boards in the Taiwan Strait where strong NE wind speeds up through the Venturi from October to March and then SW wind blows the opposite way in the summer.
