Higher Wind Board Size?

Postby MickeyFIN » Tue Aug 04, 2015 9:56 am

I've been learning the ropes with a 140*46 (flat bottom, classic outline, felt ok), 142*42 (slight concave, straight outline, had difficulties in lower winds).

I ended up buying an Axis Patrol 2013 144*46 (quad concave w spine and channels, slightly curved outline) and it seems to work very well in sub 25 knot winds for me.

As I'm already progressing into higher winds riding I would like to get a smaller board with good grip and tracking. Axis Limited / Vanguard seems to provide just that, but having the option to buy either a 132*41 or 135*42 board I thought to ask you guys which one you would prefer as your 20+ knots board as an 88 kg weighing male rider with kites of 18, 13, 9 & 5 m^2.

I guess the 132*41 would serve better as edging is easier the more narrow the board. Unfortunately I won't be able to test the boards, but the Patrol seems grippier than it's typical peers.

Thx for any input :)

I am 82 kgs and ride 3 twin tips depending on wind conditions. My high wind board is an Axis Limited 132, and it works well for me when I'm really powered. I also have an RRD Poison 135 x 43, but I find that I can usually ride the Axis 132 if conditions allow me to ride the RRD 135. For me, the difference between the 132 and 135 isn't so much when I can ride one or the other, but rather it's the fact that the smaller board requires a bit more precision in landing tricks cleanly. My light wind board is a Slingshot Glide 149.

I'm a true fan of the Axis boards. I don't think you can go wrong with either the 132 or 135, Vanguard or Limited.

Width... or the reduction of width is more important than for holding power than length. Smaller is better.

Also Consider rocker. More rocker allows you to hold more power.

On a side note. You go from 9m to 5m? Whààaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? . Get a 7m!

Thx. Makes sense.

Regarding u'r sidenote on 9 to 5... Yes :) The "fiver" is actually a LEI I used to initialky train with instead of a trainer. A Switch Element V2. A "seven" is in the plans.

I'm a little bit lighter than you and I ride a Tona Pop 142. Does not matter what the wind is blowing. If it is too light I don't ride a twin and grab my skim. If I can not hold it down I get a smaller kite not a smaller board.

Pick a board based on weight and style. Not how much wind you have.

Yes. That is an notable point. Even though I am not sure if I fully agree.

I'm not into jumping much yet, but deffo want to learn! As we were kiting around at a local spot in winds where I could barely ride properly edging with my Patrol and Rebel 13 changing the board into a smaller 133*42 Gaastra Vane made a quite a difference. With the latter combo it was quite clear that I was able to collect big speed while still in control edging and therefore I tend to believe jumping high would have been a lot easier with the bigger kite and smaller board combo.

Alternatively changing into my 9m kite and still staying with the bigger board made cruising without aiming at jumping feel more pleasant.

So... I believe I can see your point at least regarding style or "theme" of the session; which I know, I personally surely prefer to change every now and then.

Thx.
