Hydrofoil mast filled with water

Postby abel » Tue Aug 04, 2015 4:25 pm

I've red that the Alloy masts fill up with water.

Is this correct?
If positive, doesn't it increase the weight of the hydrofoil too much?
Affects floating capacity of the foil set?
Any other issues?

yes it is. no big issue with the added weight when you ride. it drains out relatively quickly. Draining after the use seems to be better than trapped water (or just moisture) inside for prolong periods and should help prevent early corrosion. I'm sure there is a way to seal it properly, but than the added cost issue comes to fore. Works well as is. As for bouyancy: sure, it would add to it if filled with foam, but there is not enough volume there to make to make it float anyway. Water inside the mast when board sits on the water surface adds no additional weight, so no extra volume in board is needed. Weight penalty over full carbon is not that big - at least on Alpinefoil Access 5.0, if any.

I think people over estimate how much weight it adds. There just isn't that much volume inside the mast.

I agree with borist, better to let it drain out Than to seal it up I think. If you seal it up, water will eventually get in and could be corrosion problem.

I saw the new Cabrinha mast is welded to fuse, so should only let water in from the top? That would allow it to dry out, but stop water getting in while riding, so seems like a good plan.

Local guy here rides the LF foil and I asked him how it feels when it fills with water. He didn't even notice that it was filling with water. I tried it out. Afterward I noticed water seeping out on the beach. I don't think it made much difference.

you don't notice it until you try to jump with it or getting out of the water with it in your hands...its kind of annoying more than a performance hinderance

i was thinking of filling it with pond foam, and if it ever got water logged i would just snake out the foam and do it again, or 3m 5200 around the seals....not sure yet
don't really care to disassemble it afterwards... so maybe even get someone to weld it together?

Can you elaborate further on the jumping issue?

the extra water weight adds swing weight, you feel it more compared to a waterless foil, kinda like jumping with a big heavy twin tip vs a lighter one, only the swing weight is a lot more
