Heading back to NZ for the hols, have 2x 23kg luggage limit each so is taking some gear
Canvas duffel bags are cheap (in the US!) so I was thinking to push the dimension limits with a pair, but:
Side zip or top loading?
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_st_price ... e-asc-rank
I'm thinking zip for ease of use, but then squarer shape of the top load might be easier to pack stuff in...

I would opt for the top load , but make sure its 100% secure . I've worked for a major US airline since 87. and i see these tops unbuckled and open all the time ,, zip tie, lock, do what ever you have to do to keep the top flap from opening .

You could get a North Face Base Camp XL duffle. Not cheap but will last you a lifetime. Using mine extensively for 8 years and tho it's looking worn( dirty) it's in good shape and my son will inherit it from me.

Cheap is the key point -- the trip is already too expensive!
Will a $20 bag out last it? Probably not, but it may be more economical...
