Hi everyone new to this forum and the sport. I've slowly been piecing together a full set of gear for myself to get into kite boarding. I've been also looking for groups in my area that teach kite boarding. The situation I've run into is after probably 2 or 3 months of actually trying to get in touch with these instructors I have had absolutely zero luck. At this point I've resigned myself to either one having to wait another year to where I can afford to travel out of state and get lessons somewhere else in the country or try and teach myself. I figured I'd ask if this is actually a viable option of teaching myself or if it probably would be better to wait another year?
Welcome to the sport
Where are you located?
I would say it's possible to teach yourself at a spot that has other kiters but if no one is there to tell you whether the spot is safe and guide you it might not be a good idea.
You don't know if your local spot is safe. Is wind messed up, current, rocks under water ... ?
You don't know what size kite to use.
No one to really watch out for you on water.
On the other hand if it's safe spot with steady wind you can probably learn in safe way if you make sure you go over all security features....
Anyway it's hard to tell you, you can't do it alone but there are many stories of people learning the hard way by themselves 10/15 years ago, including my instructor
New gear has a lot more security features but you still need to learn how to use those...
I took some lessons but went over so much youtube content prior to lessons that I already knew which exercise to practice while in water and instructor was there to give me only a couple of tips but mostly for renting out gear and it was nice to have someone sort of watching you while on the water...
Though it's always nice to have other people around to tell you which kite size and to use and which spot are going to have good wind and such...
I suggest you get a cheap/used trainer kite and start with that, checking out youtube video on what kind of training exercise you can do. Perhaps that will give you a better idea
